You can't effectively debate an issue unless you know where others are coming from which is why "a friend of mine" stories would have ended my participation in this thread. It's like playing the telephone game. It starts out that a guy didn't get hired and 18 "friends of mine" later, the employer said, "Sorry. I can't hire you even though your more qualified. I have a quota to meet." |

I've seen two people who were equally unqualified, but never two equally qualified.
I've heard this argument many times before but I have yet to find anyone who was actually shot down. It's always been "a friend of mine". | Yes to me. However I shrugged it off and found something better. There is always inequities in any system and while it would benefit all to eliminate them that day will not come in my lifetime. Seamus, you work for one of the better organizations for treating people as people. While not perfect the US military focuses on performance more than anything in most cases.
In the end though prejudice is just another challenge in life. You can succumb to it or overcome it. The effort to overcome will yield benefits and the choice to succumb will yield a curse. Regardless of color we all have challenges, talents and fortune how we choose to utilize them determines who we are FAR more than skin pigmentation.
Oh and focusing on the inequity will live you a bitter shell if you let it

| Re: I want to rant about racism and fairness Let's see, Americans enslave Africans so their cotton industry explodes, making Anglo-Americans rich.
Americans (and British Colonies - Canada) con Chinese people to help build the railroad - often for nothing more than a couple of chickens for the family - Anglo-American/Canadians get rich.
Look, I don't think we should blame the "white man" for any of our present day problems (overt racism aside), but to say that it ain't easy being white is a crock of poop.
From a Chinese kid who grew up in a smaller town dominated by white peeps, I'm telling you it would have been easier being white than ethnic. - for the simple fact that standing out and being the "chink" was tough. Fought a lot, won a few, lost a few. Being a white kid I wouldn't have had most of those confrontations.
I'm proud of who I am, but not because I was born "Chinese". Being born of any ethnicity doesn't mean anything - luck of the draw if you will; it's who you become that matter.
I love Canada, it's provided me a home and an education, plus the fact I have English skills which enabled me to for example, more easily use the Internet and learn programming languages. I'll never be happier than the way I've had my life. If I had stayed in Hong Kong, I probably would have flunked out and been a nobody.
Still, Caucasian guys who cry about sucking being white is naive beyond belief. Does it really hurt when we call you "round eyes"? I thought not. |

Well, except for the last part.
I really just sat there like a good cracker, scared for his life! | Very funny. I have stood up as the only "cracker" and screamed that kind of ****. But hey, I be a wack. Quote:

NO ONE MADE the Chinese come to the Americas. They came by CHOICE because working on the railroads or anywhere else was better than starving or being murdered in China.
That's the fact, Jack - get a reality check.
As for me: I hate everyone equally. Although, I might hate BMW M-3 drivers and short people a little more. I be a short-bimmer racist! Lordy, have mercy. |

If affirmative action actually directly puts you at a disadvantage, take pride in overcoming it because you are the best at what you do. |

well, I wasn't alive in that era, so I dunno about being murdered in China -this was before communism remember. Starvation, sure. That could be it, maybe it was from the opium that the British was bringing in to drug most of the society. Again, my Chinese history is a little fuzzy. Unfortunately, a lot of that period has been propagandized by Asian movies.
But do I blame white men? Only the ones that called me chink growing up. |

MANY round eyes came here that way Now given a choice between that (short term slavery) and the real thing the decision is easy. The reality is that many things were harsh then. Of course if we quite whining and look around things are pretty good now (as you seem to have done ) Of course maybe Stegen should look around next...

Reverse the situation and put whitey over there. That would be a nasty situation.
Hurts no more being called round eyes then it hurts you being called "slant eyes". |

This was not true until very recently. Say about 6 yrs ago, at least with the Navy. Because of demographics and quota requirement were getting out of hand they got rid of the following on our exams, RACE/SEX/NAME. When I was getting out all you put on there was a social security number. However, people failed to realize that demographics can still be gathered from those items.
The Navy will never admit to this but..... rumor mill had it.....
Actual fact here: Test results were due out on X date. X date passed with no word.
Navy Times rumor(our national Enquire): The results were sent back cause the ADM wanted more women/black/and other ethnics to be promoted. So, they went back and lowered the cut-off and promoted more people.
Now, what was the backlash of this. We now had more Petty Officers through out the ranks than we knew what to do with. And some got promoted that in no way should of been.
As I was leaving the Navy was getting away from Affirmative Action. It was really starting to cause more problems then it was worth. Don't know what the story is now cause I am retired and slavin' for the man.
Bottom line to me is that you need to be hired, promoted, and retained on your abilities alone. More doors are open to ALL AMERICANs and this race card just needs to stop being played, PERIOD. Your black, white, female, hispanic, native american... get over it and get on with your life. You and you alone are responsible for your present day situation and future potential, not the way you ancestors were treated. As a matter of fact, why don't you do your heritage pround and step up and out. Get out from under that umbrella of "the "man" owes me".
And for the record, a black man would get hired before an Irish man would back during the potato(e) famine.
Off the box... NEXT. |

| Re: I want to rant about racism and fairness I know what you're saying is true in general. Much like a lot of laws, policies and regulations designed to combat injustice (not just racial but any type of injustice), the stuff put in place to level the playing field is an overreaction. It still happens today. Rather than take the time to research the source of the problem, we typically try to quell a symptom so there is an immediate "fix" that everyone can see. |

agreed....I just find it a bit peculiar that this story isn't being blown up in the media like the Clarett story, the trouble that the Bengals are having, or any other less serious stories....in my opinion, this is something that is just as news-worthy as Clarett, the Bengals or Landis.....I wonder why? |

I find most professional athletes (football, baseball, basketball) are a bit to important. So I usually flip the channel anytime they are talking of their private lives (there are VERY notable exceptions like Walter Payton and Pat Tillman). There are a lot of role models in pro sports, most negative though.
