North Korea tests Nuke

Well, we knew this was going to happen sooner or later.

http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/asiapc...est/index.html

Seems we let Kim Jong Il get his fantastic weapon. Oh well, at least Saddam Hussein isn't in power anymore.

The question is, how long until the North Koreans refine the Taepodong missile to put a warhead on it? I have a feeling Kim Jong Il would like nothing more than to level Seoul or Tokyo.

Also, as the article suggests, will other countries such as Iran see that we pretty much did nothing against the DPRK, therefore giving them a green light to create their own weapons? How about our allies such as South Korea and Japan?

Hopefully they will get a missile system operational soon...

Edit:
Forgot to ask if anyone has seen where it was a confirmed nuke yet....

Interesting...even China was at least publicly telling them not to do it.

Re: North Korea tests Nuke

last night was the beginning of a new phase in an ever changing world I believe. Japan and S korea have a lot riding on this.

My thinking is N korea will use this as 'leverage' to have economic and other trade embargos dropped. Nothing more. It's a 'see how big and important we are' move IMO.

Very very interesting is right...

Re: North Korea tests Nuke

from the new york times:

Quote:
While there was agreement among scientists that an explosion occurred, seismic readings raised questions about the size of the weapon and whether it worked properly. A successful nuclear test would be expected to have the same force as between 10 and 60 kilotons of high explosives. This one may have been less than one kiloton.

“We have assessed that the explosion in North Korea was a sub-kiloton explosion,” said one intelligence official, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue. He added, “We don’t know, in fact, whether it was a nuclear explosion.” He spoke as intelligence analysts in Washington were in the early stages of assessing the explosion.
Moscow has said to estimate it between 5 and 15 kilotons...

Sort of what I did (among other things) some time ago. I can tell you that Moscow uses a variation on licking their finger and holding it in the air to tell where and what they are measuring . . .

In other words, I wouldn't make book on that little observation . . .

Re: North Korea tests Nuke

Nothing more then being an attention WHORE. NK has some killer econ problems. Can barely feed their people. This place is either going to have a revolution or attack someone else. Only a matter of time.

There was a time where China was behind all this poking and prodding of the world. Using NK as a puppet. That has changed. China is becoming a serious world power and really needs/wants to seperate itself from the very monster it created.

Next 5 yrs are going to be interesting folks. Those who are whining about the Afghanistan and Iraq, stand the f*ck by cause the real sh*t is comming.

Re: North Korea tests Nuke

I hear economic aid sanctions are being pressed into issue. That should be interesting. As was stated, NK has been receiving a considerable amount of food aid for years now. So what happens if the UN cuts off aid? Who are the hungry, angry masses going to blame? Are sanctions going to work at all? Do they ever?
