I think is the pussy footin way that we treat our kids now a days. oh no they have to sit down for five minutes what does that teach them? that no matter what they do nothing "serious" will happen to them. Keep putting them in time out... i'll see your kid of the front page of the paper. |

First, if they are old enough to be evaluated in a heirarchical way, they are older than the children I am talking about. You wanna hit an older kid, go ahead. It is wrong, and nearly every reputable psychologist will tell you so, but at least they might be old enough to deal with it...They are afraid. Afraid of disappointing mommy and daddy, afraid of non-conformity, afraid of something...My kid is only 3 and a half...Hitting a kid that young just gives him a model of hitting to repeat in school, with his friends, or with his sister.
Idiots who hit young kids are poster-folks for why we need to start issuing licenses to breed in this country... |

I have no problem agreeing that there is a fundamental problem with the way our kids are raised, if they keep getting into trouble, but look: Hitting is ONLY a punishment, just like jail is only a punishment. There are no rehabilitative programs for our prisoners, just like hitting a kid doesn't teach him how to not do the wrong things in the future...The kid might not do the exact same thing again, but that doesn't stop him from doing something else...And there have never been in my experience, and I would be hard pressed to believe someone who said it, a kid who was hit only once...If it was as successful and "definitive" a punishment as advocates say, why do folks hit more than once? I don't use exclusively the "time-out" issue...There is the loss of a favorite toy, limitations on friend contact, the occaisional, ok often, raised voice, and other things, all coupled with some variety of retraining that organizes the naughty thing into a class of naughty things, and frankly, my kid doesn't repeat anything in the class again...Except for the current issue with the non-listening. See, I want him to "obey" but my wife insists on him "listening" and to you that might not be too different, but he is the smartest little dude I have ever seen, and he KNOWS that listening is not the same as obeying... |

| Re: What one thing pissed you off, today? Spanking is not just any old hitting, it is effective with younger children. 2-5 when they need it the most. My kids do not perform well in school because they are afraid. They do it because they thrive on learning. If they did poorly they would not be spanked, but they would have to make it right. One year the oldest had some incomplete assignments we made him finish them even even though he couldn't get a mark. Last year he got caught writing "f*ck you" on a brick with liquid paper. He didn't get spanked for it but we supported the schools discipline and made him clean it off. We don't want our kids to live in fear but we will hold them accountable for their actions. It is that accountability that makes them behave responsibly. That said there is nothing wrong with a child being afraid of doing wrong. I require my children to both listen and obey. It is a matter of safety. A three year old does not know enough to stay out of harms way. Therefore obedience must be automatic. My kids went over my knee a few times on that one. I would not rely on spanking alone it is but a small part of the whole discipline scheme. Often if my kids engage in an inappropriate behavior I put the shoe on the other foot. For example, if you don't listen to me I won't listen to you. When they see what it's like on the receiving end it teaches them to empathize. I definitely don't like the raising of the voice. I think it's destructive. People can't think properly when they are yelled at. A small child may tune you out or be so paralyzed with fear that they cannot process anything you are telling them. As they get older you will have to yell louder and louder eventually you will either yell non stop to no effect or you will give it up. |

| Re: What one thing pissed you off, today? when they are that young fear thinks a little better than logic. they may not understand that the car is going to kill them. but they know if they don't listen to daddy they will get it. that fear keeps them inline. if they don't listen their lives may depend on it. i would rather cause a few minutes of pain then a lifetime. |

| Re: What one thing pissed you off, today? WERD! I took my share of asswhoop! I don't get violent, as for my own kids, they've had their share and they don't get violent. I have my 17 yr old niece living with me from Vegas. her dad is worthless and she doesn't respect her mom so they send her to me. I told her we will do fine as long as she improves in school and stays out of trouble. the threat of my foot in her ass has kept her doing GREAT in school and when I get hom the house is cleaned and vacuumed so with that in mind I have to say give them one good whoopin and after that you just threaten them with another and they stay in line! |

It would be a more persuasive set of examples if you DIDN'T hit your kids...The fact that you do reinforces my point, that violence (and hitting kids is a violent act) begets violence. You were hit, and now you hit...Thanks for proving my point! You have presented a prime example of motivation by fear rather than motivation by reason, desire, or instilling a sense of self-discipline. It also clearly demonstrates the difference between commanding respect by earning it, or merely demanding respect by causing pain and fear...Nice way to show love...All for a clean house? |

To say violence begits violence is the same as saying that because you grow up in the projects means you'll never get out and do something with your life. or because your dad is an alcholic you will be to. We all have choices to make to improve on the past when needed. Fact is wippin ass has worked for many many years. Ever since the don't spank your kid sh*t hit the media we have had kids bringing guns to school and offing motherfukers in record numbers. Kids are smart. you think in time they won't figure out that a time out for 15 minutes is worth what I'm about to do? Getting you ass whipped is almost never worth it. Respect out of fear... maybe but when i go out in public my kid isn't the one screaming about not getting something, or because their food isn't on the table yet, or even worse... just because they aren't getting their way because they know I'll snatch them up with the quickness and wip that ass |

| Re: What one thing pissed you off, today? Sorry Bear, but I agree with Cow and SamoanzRR on this one. My old man very rarely hit me or my brother, but when he did there was a bloody good reason for it, and we never did it again. I'm pretty sure we turned out okay.
Certainly neither of us has a criminal record or have brought shame on the family.
I was chatting to a friend recently about the state of the UK (I've not been home for nearly three years now) and the violence is growing there. A number of things have brought this on. But the highlights seem to be laws that say if your parents hit you, you can legally divorce them, teachers cannot punish kids with a smack or they will be sued and the police are being equally restricted.
I think, sadly in many ways, Machiavelli was right. '...rule with love and fear...' Ok, I admit he when on to say, '... but if you can only rule with one then rule with fear.' But the first part makes my point, I think.
By the way, the laser treatment on my eyes yesterday really pisses me off. Does that count? |

My initial point still stands: There is absolutely no reputable child psychologist, behavioral specialist, or social scientist that would advocate the hitting of a child...The fact that the group of you were hit, and then continued the cycle, pretty much backs up the data...Do what you want, but I know you are all wrong. Hitting someone you love? That seems an awful lot like abusing the one you claim to love, to me...The fact that they don't commit violent crime is much more influenced by the fact that committing violent crimes is a mature manifestation of anti-social personality disorder, that you and your kids obviously don't suffer from, than it is any posituive result of beating them up... |
