Minimum wage caused huge upset in the business sector crying that companies would collapses overnight, unable to compete with the rest of Europe doom gloom etc etc, didn't happen ever, not once, and it gets increased every two years, sometimes sooner to attempt to stay in line with inflation, and a bit more.
No country is perfect, but it's a shame that lessons can't be learnt from others, just to help people on a bit.
You mentioned healthcare, that's free over here, bit of a waiting list sometimes but free none the less, can't imagine a world were I'd have to worry how I'd pay if my wife was hurt, or I needed my CBR surgically removed ............ but that's something else entirely |

Just kidding! You're right, though. It would be nice to learn from history or from a basic consideration about what is right. Unfortunately, the golden rule still generally applies...He who has the gold makes the rules...
We get the same tired arguments against increasing min wage here. It isn't that the arguments aren't valid --they are. But, as I said, either side is missing half of the real point, that economics is a fluid system, not a mere set of rules.
I might consider those emergencies, and the emergency gets treated first, then the bills come... |

Either weekly, monthly or even annually. It's not taxable and does not affect their wages in ANY way ....... how backwards we are in little Britain |

Tipping throughout the UK is strictly optional. A tip may be offered for good service in a restaurant, barber's, hairdresser's or for a taxi journey but it is clearly understood that a tip will not necessarily be given. If the person hoping for a tip were to ask for a tip or indicate that a tip was insufficient, then the customer would be likely to get angry and complain.

| Re: Tipping the Bellboy, Waitress etc How does it work in the US?? And Why?? I like to tip very well. Most times 40-70% depending on the place. But I will tip very low and complain to the manager if service is very bad. I don't think I ever left no tip though.
I went to brunch a while back and the bill was $40 for 2 so I tip $20. Service was pretty good. $120 bill is $40-$50 tip (if the service was good)
I started doing a new thing a while back that works very well so much so I use it all the time now.
I grab lots of rolls of $1 gold coins from the bank. Whenever my server comes to my table to bring anything for any reason they get a $1 gold coin (unless its a fancy high class place, then i don't do that).
Most all of them look at the first coin with a puzzled look when they bring water to the table. I tell em its for the great service so far. Then bread another $1, extra napkins $1, and for anything else $1. by the 3rd or 4th $1 they get the clue and the rest of the night is very very good service. I still tip at the end also (which surprises them). I had one place that had not only my regular waitress bringing things but other waitresses were bringing my drinks also and getting $1's. Hehe I had one girl had to shoo away her competition and said it was almost like i was cheating on her with the other waitresses. Always a fun night out I can tell ya.
Here in the states, if you ain't got the money to spend on tips then make something home and stay in. |

| Re: Tipping the Bellboy, Waitress etc How does it work in the US?? And Why?? There are plenty of restaurants in the US that don't require a tip. Mcdonalds, Arby's Taco bell. They all make a flat hourly rate and you get the service you'd expect from such a restaurant...horrible.
I get a bit upset with this whole debate and have a hard time remainging "cool" when talking about it. People take jobs as servers in the US with the understanding that their income will come from the public. Simple philosophy; do a good job, get rewarded...do a bad job, get stiffed. What motivates a person more than money?
If people are too cheap or self righteous to leave a tip, like the rest of the country...then either stay at home or eat fast food. Tipping is part of our society, plain and simple. If you don't tip and frequent a restaurant, dont whine when the level of service you recieve declines.
There two types of people that are renowned for being poor tippers. Most all foreigners (which a lot of the time can be written off as ignorance to the ways of our society; they don't tip where they are from and have not yet been privied to our culture) and like it or not...black people. I have yet to figure this one out, but nevertheless, black people as a majority are known as being poor tippers.
and I ramble on... |

I have no problem leaving a tip. i base the tip on my drink. (usually soda). if that glass goes empty the tip is going down every minute it remains empty.
if i have to start drinking water because the glass is empty too long they are losing their tip.
if my glass always has soda in it then they will get the 15% standard.
if my glass has soda and the bring me one on deck so i don't have to wait for them, and they really put in some effort to show us a good time i will leave a big fat tip.
we live in a small town, when you return they remember. |
