What are the motives for re-introducing the draft? Are the recruitment numbers that low or are they increasing the size of the forces? |

| Re: Military Draft reinstated in 2005? Here's the funny - or ironic - bit. When the Iraqi conflict began, the dems were shouting about how the military would be troubled, and that if there were a draft the government would be more picky with it's military adventures. Many democrat Congressmen were stating that the draft should be reinstated. Now that someone drummed up some baseless rumors of it, the dems are complaining about it.
The military is having no problem with personnel. The enlistmen numbers are fine, and they are issuing cutbacks in some places.
The only reason we may need a draft would be if (when) another major terrorist strike happens, and the cowardly countries continue to stand idle instead of helping defeat the problem.
Protecting ourselves from another major terror attack is the single most important issue the United States faces today. I find it sad that many polls show that certain groups of Americans don't find it to be important.
If it came down to something major happening and America needing to defend our borders, you can be damn sure that every military unit will be called home from their bases defending countries too cowardly to do so themselves. The draft would only be necessary in the face of a major long-term conflict that produced major losses. Of course, if that were to face us, there are certain weapons that we could deploy to prevent that from happening. |

Personally, I'd love it if they did. Everyone who can, should serve their country. In Germany you owe the gov't 9 months. If you don't want to go in the armed forces, you can goto things like a nursing home and work. Not completely analogous as you get more benefits from the gov't in Germany too...
But it's not going to cut down on gangs or violence. LTL, hypocrite who never served in the military.

| Re: Military Draft reinstated in 2005? From the searches I've done... it looks to be in committee and still alive. There is plenty of support indicated by the number of sponsors that signed the original legislation. Stay tuned.
I'm concerned about my 16 year old and his future even without the spector of military service in the "neverending war". I do not want to bury my son in a uniform of a government that lies about war. |

The military is NOT letting many people out right now. I personally know of a handful of people that are trying to get out but can't. The reason being; They need bodies. |

LTL... I agree. I think everyone should serve their country as well. I wish I were back in today although I can't justify it given the state of the military and the budget for this country. :/
Anyway, I'm still interested in the motives for even suggesting it (even if it isn't a reality). |

| Re: Military Draft reinstated in 2005? I'm Navy. The Navy is downsizing from 375,000 now, to 300,000 by 2010. 7,500 this year, and up to 9,000/year projected until 2010. They are revolving on a number to offer us a dollar amount to get out without accepting a retirement and benifits.....for those that are coming up on their retirement years. They have already started with jobs that are overmanned; offering for the people with those jobs to; what we call "cross-rate" into other jobs, or get out. The boot camp numbers are going to drop from 48,000 a year to 40,000 a year by 2005 I believe the NAVMESSAGE said. I seriously doubt a draft will appear anytime soon, especially not for the Navy! |

| Re: Military Draft reinstated in 2005? I don't think there will be a draft either.
My statements above refer to people I know in the army on Ft. Bragg in Fayetteville, NC... The largest Army base in the US, home of SF and Delta Force... I'm glad my GF got out when she did (both army and NG). |

Klinton.....he wasn't minding the store when Bin Laden formally declared war on the United States. He had the opportunity to deal with the bitch and he failed miserably.....
