Guess I didn't get the memo

When exactly did BC (as in Before Christ) become BCE? And WTF is BCE anyway? Before Common Era I think?

The haters are getting thier way.

We had some morons come into a service down here, start ranting and destroy a 100 year old marble alter. The FBI is 'checking' if it is a hate crime

Disclaimer: I disapprove of the hate crime laws, punish action not thought. However if the absurd law is on the books enforce it evenly.

Re: Guess I didn't get the memo

Ugh. I bet 9 out of 10 people don't think a thing about religion when they see 800 BC or 2000 AD. To me, it's one of those designations that have been used for centuries that's probably lost most of its original connotation. Does it really offend any religious group to say "Aristotle was born in 384 BC" instead of "Aristotle was born in 384 BCE"?

My understanding is BCE is Before Christian Era. Since some people don't believe in Christ they reject BC, but it is hard to argue that an era of Christianity began approx. 2005 years ago.

If it is now Before Common Era, then people are continuing to erode the meaning of things, and hide from reality.
Oops, guess I shouldn't judge

Re: Guess I didn't get the memo

The first time I saw it was in religious school in my synagogue in the '50's-'60's.

For obvious reasons, they had to relate historical events outside of the Jewish calendar, which is now on 5766, and thus cited events like the destruction of the temple as 135 CE --- Christian Era, I also heard it referred to as the Common Era.

I have never seen it referred to outside of that context.

If citing a date requires an expression of faith, then by all means go ahead and make it-- I don't think the guys in the black helicopters are onto that yet.

I'm not one for stepping on toes in regard to forcing religion on anyone, but I guess I just see BC and AD as rather innocuous.

they started to teach us BCE and CE (common era) back in high school (later 90s). and our books were mostly 10-15 years old.

I didn't see BCE or CE referenced from '92-'96 in college, and I had some history classes.

CLass of '99 baby! I've never heard of BC or BCE before now... then again I grew up in a town of 5000 people that has about 18 various Christian/Catholic/Mormon/JW/etc churches. That and I didn't really show up for class in the last 2 years.

edit: over 20 churches...
