Yes, I intend to. The one thing that would give me pause would be rain the whole way through. I think it would be too far to risk riding in the rain |

| Re: The official trip to New England trip thread No news, other than that it's now 1.5 weeks away
Even if the forecast ends up being crappy, I'll still get up there, I'll just trailer the bike if absolutely necessary, that's all.
Conq's plans are still uncertain, leaning towards a no-go. |

Washington auto route (which is awesome) I'll show you an incredible mexican resturaunt in Conway on the way back. Homeade Habanero relish and super genuine mexican food. MMMMMMMMMMM |

| Re: The official trip to New England trip thread Well, as far as a meeting place for the auto road trip.... 2OH is coming from the Keene area so Concord NH would be a good spot as it's easy enough to find and kinda on the way.
Josh, if you have a shorter route to the White Mtn area we could always meet up there. There are plenty of locations that are easy to find.
What day are we looking at for that, again? |

Maybe we can get a map together and email it to everyone going to see the rout. That would be easier to find out where I can meet up with you all! |

| Re: The official trip to New England trip thread Ok here is a really quick route of what I typically do when I go up to the White Mountain area....more or less....
If you guys come across Rt.9 to 89 south into Concord (down to the bottom of the map) we can shoot up Rt.3 and/or 3A to the Kanc and then up 16 to the Mt. Washington Auto road. Up the Mountain and then back down 16....now here is where everything depends on how people are feeling. We can backtrack the popular east side of Rt 112 (the Kanc) and head back 'home' or we can go across Rt 302 and hit the west side of 112 completing the loop.
Completing the loop and riding back down to Concord is about 300 miles (possibly a bit more....) but there is a ton of good scenery to be seen. MAP |

| Re: The official trip to New England trip thread Route recommendations in New Jersey:
When you are going north, head for the Garden State Parkway. Take the Tappan Zee bridge and follow the signage to CT/I-95.
I tried to go up to New Haven two weeks ago only to find seven lanes turning into one in a construction zone on the Cross Bronx Expressway (this is the route you will take if you go via the GW Bridge at the end of the turnpike).
When you are coming south, try to get on I-295 in South Jersey, or take the turnpike to exit 4 and get on NJ 73 North (towards Camden/The Aquarium). Either way, you will have the option to get on NJ 38 West. Get on that, stay close to the right lane because NJ 38 will turn into US 30 and you need to make sure that you can go west on it (PM me and I can give you explicit instructions and mileage). As you were afforded the view of the Manhattan skyline going north, this is the best chance to get a good view of the Philly skyline. Once across the Ben Franklin bridge, you can hop on I-95 S and head for Chester (and points South). On the way, you can stop in South Philly and have one of Geno's famous Philly Cheesesteaks (there's another place that is a cheesesteak icon, but I forget what it is).
In Maryland, you have a tough decision to make. I grew up in Maryland, pretty much, and can say, without a doubt, the DC area drivers are THE WORST on the planet Quadruple lane changes, sans blinkers, at 85 in a 55. Jack-knifed tractor trailers EVERY RUSH hour. Speaking of rush hour, avoid it at all costs. The DC rush hour is 7:30ish to 9ish in the morning and 4ish to 6ish in the evening. Before I get to Maryland, let me talk about Virginia.
About 45 minutes south of DC, you will have a chance to get on US 301. Take it. It means that you will be stuck doing 70 instead of 85, but you can skip the Woodrow Wilson bridge.
I-95 joins the Washington Beltway in a conflagration of roads known as The Springfield Mixing Bowl, if you can navigate this (managing not to get on the Beltway going the wrong way heading for the Blackest Hole Of Them All, the I-270 Spur) or ending up on I-395 headed for Pentagon Poontown (Arlington), then you have to hope that you don't hit the worst traffic spot on the planet, the Woodrow Wilson Drawbridge (which may or may not be open), which invariably has bumper to bumper traffic, which may be doing 15 mph or 75mph, neither of which I prefer, even in my car.
You can take 301 to the DC Beltway, well away from the border skirmishes. Now, the Big Maryland Decision is whether you take I-95 N through Baltimore or you take US 50/US 301 East. Same restrictions as before for the 301/95 decision, but there are added considerations. If you take 301, you can stop in Annapolis for lunch. That should be close to halfway, otherwise, you are in for truck stop sliders until you get well into Connecticut.
The trip is about 10 miles further. You will save money in tolls, though. $2.50 to get across the Bay Bridge (a nice sight, in and of itself) and you are good to the Jersey Turnpike. Otherwise, it's $1 to get through one of the B'more tunnels, $4 at the middle-of-nowhere-only-one-way toll halfway between B'more and D'ware, and $2 for the Delaware Turnpike. The flipside is that if you roll through Baltimore, you get a good view of downtown, and you can basically pull off of 95 and eat at the Inner Harbor.
As noted, you don't have to pay the $4 toll on the way down, so maybe 301 on the way up and 95 on the way back. And you can just as easily stop in Annapolis on the way back (I love that town, actually, I love those three blocks down by the docks).
I have written a lot, but not said much, so if something I wrote looks interesting PM me, and I will try and actually put the thoughts together in an orderly fashion.
EDIT: No offense intended to the ladies... a recent poll by a DC social magazine notes that more than half the dating men in the DC area expect to get it on on the first date. The other place in Philly for cheesesteaks is Pat's. And, if you decide to have a beer, just ask for a lager (and make sure it is draft, the bottled stuff ain't so good). They'll bring you a Yuengling, which is a local favorite. Smooth with a middle body and good taste. |
