I'd like to say that I'm totally satisfied with my Sony earphones, but... I'm not, because they become painfully uncomfortable after about 3 hours of continuous wear under the helmet (this usually happens some distance before a fuel stop, making the miles to the fuel stop seem longer).

What I'd like to know is if anyone here has tried the Etymotic ER-4 earphones. Aerostich recommends them, they've made a number of audiophile top product lists, so I don't doubt that they're excellent for sound reproduction, but... how are they under a helmet after several hours? Anyone?

They're ~$240 for a set, non-returnable in most cases, so it's a lot of cashews to drop on something that doesn't solve the problem...
