[Motopilot]

Normally when taking a lengthy trip, I use a tankbag and tail trunk. However, this year, I want to ride my 954 out east. I plan on taking only the essentials that can be fit into a small but comfortable motorcycle backpack. Any suggestions on what type/manufacturer pack I shuld be looking at?

Those bags like Alpinestars, etc are cool, but I use the backpack I used in college (it hauled my books to class just fine when I rode to school). It's just a 'regular' backpack, but it gets the job done and it was less than $50.

I'd never carry my stuff in a backpack because God forbid I had to hit the ground, the stuff in the backpack can cause additional damage to my body. *

Why not use your tail bag?? I don't quite understand. You'll still have a bag to deal with and the extra weight won't be on your back to bear.

Or, just take a few pair of undies & socks and put them in the bike trunk...no bags needed at all.

Good points. Because I mounted a high mount exhaust, there are few places to strap my tank trunk onto the rear seat (although the luggage locker looks interesting). As far as injuries, I never carry anything with hard points around my body. The stuff I would carry are undies, t-shirts, socks, and my supplex zip-off pants. Toiletries get stowed under the seat. Therefore, not much weight on my back . . . I made that mistake years ago on a cross country trip.

If you just need a backpack,I recommend costco/sams club,bought a eastpack backpack and it has held up great.I commute rain or shine and my only recommendation with a backpack is using an old keyring or twist tie to lock the two zippers together.I lost a 3lb bag of grapes at fwy speed when the zippers opened,too bad i did not get to see the looks on the cage drivers faces as hundreds of grapes bounced all over the freeway.

Have you considered the VENTURA?

It will work with high pipes and even has optional backpack straps if you want to lug it around off the bike.

I lost one of my $110 pair of gloves that way.....just one out of the pair that is, not both. That made me even more mad

I also use a backpack for my camera gear upon occasion. I got a great one (with a built in pad on the back) at the local outfitters for about $50. It has a wide back/torso belt on the botton and a strap on the main arm loops to keep the thing totally motionless on the back. Plus it has all sorts of attach points (I used them to fill the pack and then strap an extra helmet on the outside - and rode 120 miles like that. No prob)

meacham that is what people overlook sometimes. These types of forums, that is why you see all the marketing/advertising taking sites over. Millions of dollars are to be had from forums. One guy buys something and posts it, then we all salivate.

MSR makes a great pack. It is a little expensive, but worth it!
It has about 10 pockets, including ext. shoe pockets, waist and chest strap, thic padding on back & shoulder straps, best of all, the is a spot for a water bladder resevoir(like a camelback insert)
