This was posted on another board and I wrote up a long response... I can't be bothered to do it again.

People have been trying to get onboard computers for some time. However, there are some inherent problems... things like using a computer hard disk in a shock-filled environment. I see HD crash. Secondly, boot times will be too long for a number of reasons... the most glaring in his setup is the fact he's using FreeBSD that requires fschk on a 40GB hard drive before it'll boot. There are more, but then we get into a whole embedded OS discussion. There are many more things that I could get into as to why his application of technology is just a kludge but why waste breath?

He's keen I'll give him that but I have to deal with computers enough in my life, the bike is the escape. Plus I'll be buggered if I could work out how to fit anything like that in the 1000RR boot.

no, it's running FreeBSD... but he's going to have issues with that because it's not a real-time system.

hehe... I'd like to see what happens when his video capture software has the same NICE value as ECU process.

I'm actually really keen on adding computers to vehicles. I don't particularly trust them for critical systems... but hey, think of the possibilities.

With a wireless link, you could get lost anywhere, download maps to your GPS and be up and running again in no time. A man's dream, we'd never have to ask for directions again! Continuing with further GPS integration, you'd have all the triangulating information you'd need... no matter if you're in the twisties or the track, you could go home and analyse your rides for better times, better lines later. You'd also be able to integrate all sorts of sensor monitoring and trending. If you were monitoring tire temperature, you could tell when they were starting to go off. You'd be able to monitor all sorts of safety aspects to the bike like tire pressure, piston timing etc. and receive warnings when things aren't right. You'd also be able to do the usual trivial stuff like music, video etc... that would be good for your entertainment but with vids, perhaps it would help identify drives that attempt to kill us. Matt232 would know the license of the bitch that hit him and ran. Further more, you'd be able to surf the .Org at next years Grattan days.

Hmmm... what else could you do with extra processing power on a bike? You could hook up LED license plate covers that give messages to the @ssholes behind you... hehe... "Piss off Copper" "You're following to close" "what's your phone number?" *grin* Seriously though, it would allow for LCD screens to be attached to your bike to provide true rear view video display (and capture) along with all the GPS information you can handle. Perhaps you'd also be able to interface with the gas pumps at the station... ride up, verify who you are, calculate your gas mileage etc. all while you pump. No mess, no fuss. Hmmm....
