Helmet Wax

OK this seems like a no brainer but....

Is there any reason not to wax a helmet? In the past I have always just let them get nasty but would like to keep the current one bug gut free. So I thought if I waxed it cleaning would be easier, however I don't want to damage it.

Re: Helmet Wax

I just remove bug residue from my helmet with a wet paper towel after every ride. Same for my one piece leathers, gloves, and boots... Seems if you keep on top of the problem, a real problem doesn't develop.

Re: Helmet Wax

I cleaned mine w/car polish, such as Formula 2001 or something like that. Never had a problem.

Re: Helmet Wax

I use simply Pledge to keep the visor clean of all the bugs & yes it has worked for many, many yrs. True Plexus is #1.

Still I also wax the helmet as well. One of the main tricks is to use a CLEAN SOFT COTTEN cloth & not the paper cloths as they will scratch the visor. Said cloths come from old & woren out T-shirts, sweat shirts, & other cotten clothing. Just cut into the size you want. I also carry them under my saddle with a plastic protectant like Pledge, Armor-All, 303, Plexus, the Turtlewax people & so many others. A new visor will probably outlive the helmet it kept cleaned. Least it does on my Shoei helmets. Yes the outside finish of my helmet are better in appearance then new products on the shelves.

Amazing things one can do with a little bit of inexpensive wax/&/or plastic protectant when used with a clean cloth.

Mind you the clean visor is more important to me then most of you as my left eye is fadding out of focus which effects depth of preception & any splattered bugs on the right side of my helmet's visor will cause me to halt & clean the visor from 2 to 6 times in a day of 4 to 8 hrs of riding on the hwys.

Re: Helmet Wax

When I bought the bike, the dealer gave my a can of slip streames motorcycle windshield cleaner & polish. I guess he should have gave me a case seeing that I purchased an Arai helmet at full price, but what the heck did I know. I was a newbie. It cleans well but I noticed that it smells just like Pledge. For all I know, it is. It does work well. It gets the bugs off and produces a great shine.

Re: Helmet Wax

Thanks I think the conclusion is no harm to the helmet but some do not feel it is necessary.

So the Duragloss wax goes on the helmet as soon as the helmet cam strip is stuck on (yes that will hurt to do to a new helmet but I have a ton of fun with it)
