Hey, for you street riders, how many of you wear a back protector? I'm just curious. I'm sure most of us don't, but I'm giving it serious consideration. To abtech and the other racer types here, what sort of things should a guy look for in a back protector that will be worn on the street (i.e. worn while sitting up most of the time, not tucked, under regular riding gear like textile jackets and whatnot)?

One of the differences I noticed while searching was wether it was jacket integrated or an actual back protector that wraps around you.. Never actually got one though just used my old phoenix back jammy in my Astars jacket for now

I wore my AS Tech unless it was a trip over to a friends house or something.

I think for comfort factor, THe Bohn would be best suited as it is a bit flexible, but the best protection usually isnt. I wear an A*s Tech that looks like a ninja turtle shell, but seems to protect real well.

I don't get on that bike without one. The Aerostich has a pretty wimpy one, so I generally remove it and use the Bohn. It was hard to get used to, and bugged me quite a bit at first, but now I feel naked without it.

I wear a Joe Rocket Phoenix mesh jacket with peferated leather at high impact areas (back and arms). It has back protection built in and is about all I can wear in the hot weather here.

I always wore full gear when I rode on the street...when i went riding it wasn't to the store!

The intergrated bp in the jackets are not enough. Period.

I wear mine. Sometimes I'm tempted not to, and then I think "This will be the one time that...." and I wear it.

Cheap insurance and just as important as my helmet.

Looks like it might be ok for not so hunched over riding. **** and now with the new bike I really think this is on the top of my list

Agreed. Those little foam things they put in the jackets are worthless. I didn't wear one till just before I started racing (because they are required) but now I wouldn't go without one. I feel vulnerable without it. I bought an Acerbis because it was less expensive than some other ones and it is fairly thin. My leathers are pretty tight as it is so I wanted something that wouldn't constrict my breathing.

Have an A/S Tech that I wear under my 1pc for track days.

My Vanson jacket has a "fair" one in it all the time. I use it for fair weather touring and occasional Sunday blasts.

My Aerobitch suit has a really "lame" one in it, but I leave it in there for commuting and inclement weather touring. I wouldn't recommend this unit, as it offers minimal protection. One of these days I will upgrade it.

I took out the back foam in my jacket and wear the A* Tech protector instead. It really makes u feel 100x's safer than foam. Besides, spine/back injuries sound like they hurt like a mutha!

On a serious note, define Back Protector.

Both of my street jackets have a foam pad back there and 50% of the time I am on the street I am wearing my backpack. Not a whole lot of "protection" there. On the track or when wearing my Vanson I use my A* Tech.

I have this A* one and recommend it. I also wear it all the time. I went down between 130-140 and took multiple hard hits on it and it did its job well.

I have 2 of them. The first is a Dianese 8 plate and it works very well (crash tested 3 times), but my favorite is the Bates unit that was custom made for me with a previous set of leathers and is still one of the best around.

I don't wear either one when I ride on the street (which means the Vulcan only), as both are designed for riding in a crouch and really wouldn't work while riding on a cruiser.

Yep - I wear my A*'s tech on most every ride. After a while you just get used to it.

Have a Dianese Gilet protector vest. If I am going to go out for a pleasure ride I wear full gear (track too obviously). If I am only going to work I only wear A* jacket, helmet, gloves, boots and jeans.

The upshot of Tiger's crash is, he's going to recover (it could have been so much worse).

The other good thing to come of this is, Kris is perhaps saving at least one of his friends (yours truly) some misery on down the road. Thanks to the discussion here, I've just ordered a quality back protector. The moment I get it (2-3 days from New Enough), I'll wear it every time I swing a leg over the bike. Period.

Funny how a little bump on the head can change the way you go about doing things.

i wear a AS tech under my JR speedmaster jacket all the time.. i even leave the foam back protector in the speedmaster to get that added protection..

I wear it 50% of the time. No real rhyme or reason for which days I wear it and which I don't. Usually turns out to be the days it's cool enough out that I won't melt. After riding with the back protector and boots on in the street for a few weeks, it won't feel natural to not wear them.

That is the back protector that I used to wear. It's a fair unit, especially for the price. I've upgraded this year to a more of a vest that has more padded coverage over the shoulder blades and has a built in chest protector.

This is the unit http://www.kneedraggers.com/details/35-DA-13. The armor on the shoulder and in the sleaves is removable for under my leathers. Then I can put it back when I need for the street under my Jacket. I give it a big thumbs up.

I have integrated ones in my Astars jackets, as well as my stitch and Honda 1 piece suit. I had been looking for one for a few months, the right one, when the group buy came up so I'm waiting for my custom one now.
