Just tested out my new Suomy Gunwind. (anthracite in color) Not impressed. It replaced my HJC AC-10 because the lining was coming apart and the visor was leaking more and more air. The helmet feels pretty good but lets a lot of air in through the chin area. I retro fitted my HJC's chin skirt on it but have yet to ride with it. The thing I hate about the suomy is the vents. There is one on the forehead and one in the mouth and I cant really even feel the switches with my gloves on. The switches are too smooth so you can't feel them. the lighter weight really isn't noticeable, (I have a strong neck.) It does seem slightly quieter. Overall I like it, but I'm glad I didn't pay retail for it! Got it for $100 through ebay from a local bike shop. Yes, it was new and sealed w/dvd and all that stuff.

hmm I am nothing but happy with my Spec1r. I know what you mean with it letting in a lot of wind under the chin. I don't really mind it much, just reposition your head. You won't mind it in hot weather. I don't have the forehead vents but I have a little trouble with the mouth vent, just open and close it and you'll figure out if its open or closed to start with (you'll know its open anyway if you notice the wind coming in). Other than that its much better than my old HJC CS12 (could have been a CL12 not sure, its relegated to a very rare passenger but usually a drag track helmet for my friend in his car). Its so much lighter, the venting is a lot better (you'll notice when it gets hot out), it engages the wind rather than just trying to plow through it. Mine is actualy louder but you said yours is quieter. give it some time I think it'll grow on you.

when I took mine for its first ride I was so pissed at how loud it was, now I don't really notice.

I have a Spec-1r Extreme and I love it. Yeah it's loud but that means I'm getting air flow, which here in AZ is a good thing. It's VERY comfy and ultra light. The one thing I do not like is the way you change the shields. I much prefer the Arai and Shoei designs. All in all I really like the Suomy helmets.

Thats one of the things I liked when I switched to my shoei. I can just pull over and change the shield without taking off the helmet

I never looked at how the Shoei and Arai visor change but I don't think the suomy is bad. you don't really need the little tool to take the covers off, a key works just fine.

I think Shoei's are about the easiest. I can switch shields without removing my helmet in about 20 seconds or less.

I have been debating about getting a new helmet. My arai doesnt fit though I love the helmet (red/yellow) raptor I cant find a replacement Its a large and I simply need a med. I was planning on selling my arai and getting this one:

Since i have a yellow/black bike it would match somewhat. Are these helmets really worth that kind of cash? I havent tried one on yet so I will have to hit the local shops and look around for one to try on.

I think most of it being loud was because I wasn't used to it so it was kind of a suprise. now I just don't pay attention to it. I shoulda wore ear plugs years ago when going to concerts but now I have a little tenitis (ringing) anyway, only noticeable when everything is really quiet

Never to late to start using plugs. I don't ride w/o 'em. That way your condition won't worsen.

You should be able to find one cheaper in a couple months. The extremes are pricey right now.

I wore a pair one ride for something like 6hrs without taking them out and I can honestly say they were very comfortable and when I got home I could actually hear

Don't pay $500 freakin' dollars for a helmet! Search ebay before you buy your helmet!

Ok what is the deal w/ earplugs? I've never used them. What are the benefits? Out bikes really aren't that loud are they? I would think it would be kind of dangerous not being able to hear any ambient noise/anyone talking to you at a quick stop along the ride. Somebody fill me in here.

They cancel out the wind and "white" noise, and you actually end up hearing other important sounds much clearer.
On the track, you can hear bikes behind you MUCH better with plugs than without.
On the street, same deal - you hear your surroundings better with plugs in than without.
Another plus - you won't go deaf as fast.

I got an industrial sized box of those (something like 200 pair) off eBay a couple years back. FWIW

Sweet. I have been looking for a large box cause all i can seem to find are boxes of 20 which i blow through like nothing

Oh I used terra only as a reference not to actually purchase, thats ridiculous to pay that much for a helmet. I like the look and style thats all. The PITT style would look nice and complement my fireblade. Sorry for the scare Im not and idiot.

Update. When I got back from a ride yesterday I noticed that one of the side covers that goes over the visor mechanism was gone. Must have fallen off at speed. (Nothing over the posted speed limit of course) I'm sure it was on tight because I specifically remember snapping it in on all 3 parts. This will definitely be the first and LAST Suomy I ever buy.

you should have gotten the spec 1R , i think that's where your problem is because i have had nothing but good things to say about my 1R , yes it is a lil loud but you do get used to it..
