| Re: JR Phoenix jacket aftermath Adam, the debate here isn't about good, solid textiles like the ones you're talking about as much as it is the free-air, flow-thu stuff that just about everyone has jumped on board with in at least one variant since Joe Rocket as a company started the trend two and a half years ago with the Phoenix.
Heck, I've got Tour Master Cortech stuff that I'd bet would slide and protect damn near as well as cowhide, but it sure as heck isn't MESH and it's beastly hot in warm weather. That's why in the three hottest summer months, I use the Phoenix.
At least for now. LTL's workin' on me. |

| Re: JR Phoenix jacket aftermath well i have the red, black, and grey phoenix 3.0, its the fastest color they had. they said the yamaha blue had been crash tested by all the squids on r1's and they had held up great, so i knew i had to have one. |

That's why Vanson, for instance, now makes a leather armed/shouldered riding jacket with mesh torso. So does Tour Master. So do others.
I've been on the scene of a few crashes the last couple three years and have yet to see a total failure of a textile jacket.
If and until someone does a decent study of the effectiveness of mesh textile riding gear, I remain something of a proponet of it. That isn't to say I dislike leather, only that I am, so far, still a believer in mesh garments as one use crash gear.

| Re: JR Phoenix jacket aftermath Actually when I stop for gas I seldom unzip the JR since it is only slightly warmer. However I got it for riding on my '84 Ascot for protection and to keep from getting sunburned on long rides. However the Ascot now has a big brother CBR1000RR next to it in the garage :-) soooo......
Might look into some leather for when I get even stupider than normal. Of course for the cost people saying 3-500 who cares. I also am looking at a new helmet, need pants (not a big deal on Ascot), just got a tailbag, want GPS, might need a radar detector etc. My point being there is never enough money, protection, time to ride, or wolf free roads. |

| Re: JR Phoenix jacket aftermath I have a black Vanson CSRV jacket, and a gray JR Phoenix jacket. The Vanson is definitely warmer, especially in slow traffic. Since having gotten the (7X more expensive) Vanson, I hardly ever wear the Phoenix. I sweat a little more in it, but I think the added abrasion resistance is worth it. |

| Re: JR Phoenix jacket aftermath I've been riding dirt since i was 8 & had a street license @ 16 B4 my car license. I admit I still am a T shirt rider & Yes I had an acccident 15 yrs ago. Got some road rash (dirt helped W/getoffs) Now that I'm older(wiser ) obviously not. I'v been thinking about the Joe Rocket Rio for warmer weather. Any opinions on that particluar jacket. Wife says she can't see me wearing 1 because "That's just not you". Guess I should show her some post. Because she does worry about me on it. |

| Re: JR Phoenix jacket aftermath i just bought one and LOVE it.
i have worn full leathers on the street since about 3 years ago, but this heat in GA is too much. I cant ride 10 minutes without being soaked through and after a couple hours starting to feel bad all over. Plus if you are going a a long ride and need to get something to eat you dont have to worry about scaring business away or your arms tripping somebody as they pass by. I bought the JR several weeks ago and it is so much cooler, it only makes sense to ride with it here.
i too worried about it riding up, but after sinching the wasteband down it feels a lot more stable. |

| Re: JR Phoenix jacket aftermath I have a JR Reactor jacket, and in the extreme heat, its the best for comfort. No doubt you are sacrificing some protection, but you're not giving up as much as it seems.
That poor guy got his jacket burned off by the engine...you can't fault a mesh jacket for melting.
I would continue to wear my jacket when it's extremely hot. Otherwise, it's leather all the way. |

| Re: JR Phoenix jacket aftermath I just sold my JR Phoenix Jacket and pants, don't need it anymore I live in Seattle now, it ****ing rains all the time and rarely gets above 80 in the riding season (all 3 ****ing months of it ). I had more than a few friends crash in them and survive with 0 injuries or roadrash. I never had a problem with mine or worried about it. I bought a set of CE armor that I would swap in the JR stuff (and in my leather, used the same set in both) to make me feel a little better. TX heat in the summer, when it's 100 degrees with high humidity, anything but mesh is just too ****ing hot.
This debate is healthy, but at least these guys are using some kind of gear you know? If a guy is going to go buy some mesh stuff because he/she lives in the South where the humidity is awful and the temps high, I really can't say anything. At least they are being responsible enough to wear gear, and be concerned with their safety. I had a CSRV (fully perfed VAnson) in the TX heat, and my goodness, still hot as ****. They only jacket I could wear where it was tolerable was the Mesh. There are always going to be mixed experiences on the product, but IMHO, they are much more favorable than unfavorable. A good friend crashed hard in his, the jacket was destroyed, but he had no roadrash, he busted his collarbone, but he would have done that with a top o the line ****ing Dainese suit. If you are wearing gear with armor, in my book you are being responsible. ARgue about the phucktards out there in T-Shirts and sandals. My $.02 |

And I have had my 285 lbs (now 271) ass in his leathers and I know this is man who has tested his equipment.... Which worked perfectly..... |

CE armor in the elbows, shoulders, and back.
There is no armor in the Pheonix, correct? |

| Re: JR Phoenix jacket aftermath I am a BIG proponent of safety gear, and wear full leathers almost any time I ride. Before I decided to completely give up riding sport bikes on the street, I bought a Mach2 jacket.
Every portion on this jacket in black is perfed leather. More than half the jacket is perfed leather, yet it is extremely cool and comfortable to ride in. I feel every bit as confident in it protecting me as full leather jacket.
Oh, and it works great as offroad protection now. |

I am a wearer of the Phoenix type jacket myself and I have to say its a good jacket for the streets but I am a bit hesitant to push in the twisties or on the highway b/c I have seen some of the aftermath of an accident with the mesh jackets. I got my mesh the day after I got my bike b/c I never knew anything about gear and just knew after my first ride in a tshirt that something had to be better then nothing to start with.
Currently looking to get a nice leather jacket (ASTARS Stunt is on the hit list for next month since its an anniversary present). Shortly followed by some track pants | |
