Forgot to add, the certification is what really matters. A proper fit with a Snell cert is all I care about, after those two things it's a matter of what appeals to you. |
Ah ha...and now I see why your name is "Crash".

Get a helmet that fits well, that is comfortable and you can trust!
Just for info I've crashed tested a HJC AC-10 (50mph lowside, severe head ache for two days), HJC AC-11 (45-50 mph highside, knocked out cold for 45mins, severe concussion, major head ache for 4 days), Suomy Spec1R (70 mph lowside, no head ache or problems) and another Suomy Spec1R (65 mph highside, no head ache or problems). Both brands saved my head and kept me from being killed, but from my personal experience, I'll stick with Suomy.
I'm looking to replace the last Spec1R with a Suomy Extreme Dragon!

A lot of different things come into play when you hit your head, that's why everyone experiences different things. See I may not have noticed any headaches because of my severe migraines. Sufferer for 20+ years

| Re: best helmet? I,m on my fourth helmet and it needs to be fitted by someone who knows how to fit a helmet. My head only seemed to fit arai signet and shoei x-11. My head has expensive taste. No more headaches and the helmet stays put at higher speeds. I did choose the x-11 due to the paint job. |

| Re: best helmet? Welcome Erasmia! (post #1 here)
I too, love the fit of the Arai Signet. I also have a Shoei Z-II. Don't know which is my favorite...I love them both.
As you have the same shape head I have, it's nice to know I have another model to try i.e. the X-11.
Yes, there have been many good suggestions in this thread. The best is try it on. If you don't know how it should fit, get help from someone who knows. Ahhh, but there's the rub! How do you know the 'expert fitter' even knows how to fit a helmet properly??? Answer: you don't, unless someone else with experience vouches for them.
Case in point. Most of us know about Arai pulling the plug on internet/mail order sales of their helmets using the lame excuse that the only way to guarantee a properly fit helmet was to see the Arai dealer. So, when my son and I went to get him a new helmet from the Arai expert fitter, I had to point out several things to the 'expert' as to why the helmet didn't fit correctly, such as he put the inside pads in backwards!
Yup, I was the one that actually did the fitting for my son and got to pay the premium for the privilege.
Don't get me wrong, I bought the helmet for him and got an excellent product, well worth the price. I am currently on my fourth Arai and third Shoei, and until quality of either product suffers, I'll continue to be loyal to these brands. It just grates a nerve that Arai never acknowledged the real reason for their policy. |

Besides that why I ride with ear plugs |

| Re: best helmet? Its a 2004 model so its a VR-1. Not as ventilated as some, but just as ventilated as some Shoei's & Arai's i've seen. Its not quite their quality, but verrrrrrrry close. And its approved by quite a few of those crash tests, Snell & DOT & one other. Plus removable liner that can be changed out to different size liners to get a perfect fit. Mine is very comfortable.

I've been wearing KBC VR-1's for the last couple of yrs. They are very comfortable to me. Fit and finish are good, and are easier on the wallet. I've been very happy with them.

| Re: best helmet? Thanks, Nomad and Mr-
I put my wifes head in a VR-1, after reading reviews and hearing testimony. I was about to replace my current bounce hat when I saw the designs for the new VR-2's. I've already heard the modular vents well, but I'm not interested in that variation.
Just waiting for someone to be the guineapig and report in on how well they ventilate - I regularly ride in 100 degree heat...

| Re: best helmet? Had an ole cheapo ARC. weighed like two tonne. Sitting very pretty now with a SHOEI XR1000 (Troy lee design of course). Is so light weight, the first time I took it off. I nearly through it across the room. The ventilation is awesome. Especially with the summers over here. In winter close all the vents - no drafts at all (neck warmers help a tonne). Is a bit noisy with visor up, But have a tinted one so shes down all day. Does not bother me at all. Money well spent. |
