| Re: new helmet giving me a headache? need help... I just picked up a new Arai Quantum/f, size med (57-58mm).
I wore it for a few hrs today and the pressure on my forehead, and just above my front hairline was enough to give me a good headache. For people ho have experienced the same thing, what helmet fits you the best? I have a Suomy Gunwind (57mm) that is great as far as fit goes but its not DOT approved, hence the new helmet for the street....thanks guys |

I'd wear the Suomy if it fits better. I'm sure if it will protect riders at race speeds that it'll be OK for you on the street, DOT rating or not. Are they that strict with tickets out there? |

| Re: new helmet giving me a headache? need help... You have an oval head just as I do. *The Quantum fits a round head much better, which is why you have the hotspot on your forehead. *I cannot wear a Quantum because I get the same headache as you. *However, the Arai Signet series is made for an oval head. *I have both an Arai Signet and a Shoei Z-II and I love them both. *Equally comfortable for me. *So much that sometimes I find it hard which one to choose to wear on a ride!
As I see it, your options would be trying to exchange the Quantum for a Signet. *E-Bay the Quantum if the dealer won't exchange, and start looking for another helmet. *Definitely try on a Signet if you want Arai. *The last option about reshaping the liner with a spoon might work, but most likely will be a compromise fit you won't really be happy with.

| Re: new helmet giving me a headache? need help... thanks guys, i bought the helmet at cycle gear and they told me i had 30days if i didn't like the fit to exchange it for another helmet, so thats no prob., well it shouldn't be anyway, i'll try the signet next, funny though, in the shop the quantum felt more comfortable, never wore a helmet that caused that much pressure before, the agv's i've had in the past were great, as is the Suomy. As far as DOT goes, i mostly need it cause i'm in the military and they require, otherwise i would just stick with what works. |

| Re: new helmet giving me a headache? need help... I'm a long oval, and I also wear a quantum/f.
I just takes some time to break the helmet in, it's going to be SUPER tight for the first month or so, but after that, the helmet conforms to your head.
If you bought it from cycle queer (errr, gear) just take it back and return it. Get the one that fits your dome the best. |

freq : try crushing the styrofoam in the forehead area?
| Freq, I'd hate to see you do something like this, as it would most assuredly impact the helmet's ability to protect its wearer. |

| Re: new helmet giving me a headache? need help... no worries, i 'did not' hog out the forehead area. I just picked up the RX-7 Corsair Haga Replica Instead. Fits much better, at least for 5min or so. tomorrow will be the real test though at MSF in the morning, about 5 hrs of wearing it. thanks for all the suggestions. Oh BTW I tried on the Arai Signet, KBC Racer1, and the SHOEI X-11 and the Corsair felt the best. cheers! |

i'm not saying reduce the styrofoam to 1/2 of its thickness, beside you could never crush it that much w/ your bare hands. more like modeling clay w/ your hands. |

| Re: new helmet giving me a headache? need help... moregripmoretip,
I was wondering if the military requires the helmet to have the DOT sticker on it and that is why you purchased a new helmet?
I am not familiar with military rules, but I used to work for a motorcycle dealership and I actually brought the Suomy franchise into our dealership.
I just wanted to let you know that Suomy as a company choose not to use the DOT standard of testing as they felt that the test requirements were not strick enough.
Example, DOT tests involves taking a batch of helmets (100 or so) and testing one helmet. If the helmet passes the whole batch is then approved.
Now Suomy decided that this testing was not good enough. They then decided to go with the BSI - British Safety Institute, which takes that same batch of helmets (100 or so) and tests every helmet. The only way that the whole batch can be approved is if 90% of the helmets pass. If less than 90% pass, the whole batch is destroyed and Suomy starts over.
Now I like Arai and Suomy both.
Just some informative information about your Suomy.
Later,

| Re: new helmet giving me a headache? need help... thanks for the info on my Suomy john, yeah, the military requires a DOT approved helmet, plus I needed a DOT helmet to attend MSF course. My Suomy actually says approved by 'Australian Standard', probably because I bought it in Australia though. |
