| Re: Anyone know what model shoei this is? I will take a guess and say a RF 800. I would be concerned as to the age of it if you were thinking of buying it to wear. I do not wear anything that is over 5 years of age. |

I'd be leary of buying a used helmet though. |

Imagine how fewer helmets they'd sell if people replaced their lids when they needed to be instead of when a manufacturer says they should be. |

I'd be leary of buying a used helmet though. | Ya looks like my rf 800, Ive been hearing alot abuot this 3-5 yr helmet life thing lately. A few shops ive been into have said it's the foam inside the shell that deteriates from all the dried sweat and what not over time. A line used by salesmen to get you to fork over more bills? Maybe, but its got me a little paranoid. |

| Re: Anyone know what model shoei this is? I'd replace at least every 5 yrs. They know you have many options when buying a helmet so i doubt their saying it so you'll buy more of theirs.
UV breaks down the helmet over time. If you store it indoors and rarely use it then yeah it should last a very long time. I however wear mine every day in the sun. |

| Re: Anyone know what model shoei this is? hey Flasher, how do you like your ZX14? Is it more comfortable than say a ZX10R?
I watched and listened to one go by me as i was standing there. A very quiet nice low sound to it, he was probably only turning 2,500rpm or so. |

WOW!!!!
see more here: its me, again! |

I'd be leary of buying a used helmet though. | no????do you understand how a helmet works??? the reason being is cuz of the sterefoam. the reason they have this there.....well think of it as an airbag for your brain. its going to soak up all the shock so you dont get knocked out from your brian hitting your head. after a while or an impact, this foam looses its effectiveness.....so ya you still might have an outer shell to protect your head from cracking open but you can get knocked out and put into a coma and die that way. |

I wear my helmet every single day, I'm a daily rider.. have a shoei picotte ( orange ) bought it last year, and i will be sure to change it out when it hits 5 years..
Would you risk your safety for a couple bucks ? pretty essential piece of kit, if you ask me.. right up there with bike maintenance... |

I'd be leary of buying a used helmet though. | It's not the outside, but the inside you should worry about. You have foam, glue and other materials on the inside. |

| Re: Anyone know what model shoei this is? I remember when that helmet came out. It was back when my X8 air falcon was new (still have it, use it for Karting) and that was in 1996. Depending when that Nobie was made it can be around 10 years old easy.
My X8 is an awesome helmet and would probably be find in a crash still but do I really want to risk it? I rather (and did) buy a new helmet that I know is good. People are correct about the foam aging and not having the impact absorbing ability it did when new. Also the shell can break down or get weak just from normal bumps and bangs, UV and heat etc. I have seen a lot of guys wear beat up helmets, drop them on the ground, wreck and still use the same helmet etc. Once it takes a sharp impact the shell is compromised and should be thrown away or sent back to be checked.
You ride a $10 grand bike with $3K in upgrades, a grand in gear and insist on using a beat up helmet? No point. Spend the money and get a good helmet. It used to be the really ggod helmets were several hundered dollars but today a few companys make high grade helmets for very little money. I only wore high end Shoei helmets for years. I reciently found Scorpian helmets and am extremely impressed. They fit very well and the construction is similar to Shoei, not cheap like HJC or some others. I high;y suggest them for anyone looking for a good helmet at a reasonable price. I think mine was about $200. |
