Helmet, boots, gloves etc. If he was mine it would be total safety gear

Re: What is all the gear i need for my son to safely ride his dirtbike

What do you use when you ride? Thats basically* what he will need when he hits the dirt...

He will need, gloves (you tend not to need ones with the plastic knuckles in them), boots (pref shin high), helmet (the MX type), goggles, race pants/trousers (they have the padding within), race jersey/top & pads (the pads can be worn either on the inside/outside) and thats about it really.

When he does start, remember to bring a couple of spare goggles and a form of cleaner (can get very dirty out there)

What will he be riding?

Re: What is all the gear i need for my son to safely ride his dirtbike

Here's what I wear: Helmet, goggles, mouth guard, EVS neck collar, chest protector, jersey, gloves, elbow pads, pants, knee pads, MX boots with MX socks. Going down is usually in the corners, that's where the elbow pads kick in. The kid should have a neck collar of some sort since little kids have bowling balls on top of a broom stick type heads. You do want him to be able to get up and keep riding, hence the overkill on gear. I've gone down at a pretty high speed wearing all my stuff and I'm always able to keep riding.
Look for last years close-outs on gear. My local shop just about gives away clearance MX kids gear. $6 jerseys, $15 pants, $30 helmets, I'm talking name brand stuff like Fox and Thor.

Also look for package deals for Boots/jersey/pants/gloves combos.

Got all the stuff except the neck brace (probably the most important thing). They are very pricey. I figure since he is just learning to go straight at a whopping 3 mphs a neck brace isnt needed so much at the moment. Next year i will get him one, unless he really excels at this i will get one this summer. Thanks guys

Pick up a foam type neck roll. They are about $30. Strap it on him and when he learns to ride with it, he won't even know it's on. His head WILL bounce when he falls and yes, you are right, the neck roll is the MOST important piece of gear just behind the helmet and boots.

The pit bike track I rode at for a couple of years required some type of neck protection for anyone under 16 years old, wonder why?

Re: What is all the gear i need for my son to safely ride his dirtbike

This is what I wear. I tried my bud's new fancy Leatt type EVS and I couldn't even look to the side. It was way too restrictive for my riding style. He had an older EVS collar and I tried it and liked it. I picked up this new style since it bolts to the chest protector and stays put much better.

Cycle Gear - EVS: Kid's RC3 Nextar Race Collar, BLACK

$40.00

Cycle gear runs sales regularly if there is one near you. I belive they are running a 10% off almost everything today in the store.
