I didn't this he was serious so I had him call me from the area where I knew the phone extension and he was in that area accordine to mapquest. He said he paid $500.00 for the device which he installed himself, talking about security! No one will ever be faster than GPS!

Re: BETTER THAN AN ALARM or LOJACK

MWAHAHAA! so then you can go to the bike...with a Van load of friends, with automatic wepons, and get the bike back!

I think I might just call the cops, and then let them handle that part of it myself. But, I know people will be doing the van idea...it only a matter of time.

Also CBR629...your avatar keeps making me lick my monitor...man, I have to stop that!

What's the system, and where'd he get it from? Can you get more info on it?

Nice! I'd love to see the look on the crooks face when you roll up...

Does he have to pay a rental/tracking fee? Similar systems I've seen up here are tracked by a 3rd party company whom you must pay for the monitoring.

I have been thinking about that too. Those things are being used by parents for teenagers(tracks MPH), husbands/wives (for cheating purposes), companies that want to keep track of employee driving etc.

I just wonder if these 3rd party 'monitors' share info with LEO's and insurance co's even if your bikes not stolen?

Aw, gee, 'poke, why would you even suspect that? Don't you realize that companies in the business of making money have only the highest possible moral values, and your best interest, at heart. You should be ashamed of yourself for holding such views.

Re: BETTER THAN AN ALARM or LOJACK

I looked in to these years ago but the service plans make it expensive for tracking kids/girlfriend/wife/etc. general use. Cool but for the price of service plans, you wouldn't want to use it except when the vehicle got stolen.

PLUS, if someone steals it with an exclosed trailer or van, the GPS is useless. After they get it to their place, they can easily and quickly remove the system. GPS does require a pretty good line of site to function & it requires battery power - another way to disable it.

Re: BETTER THAN AN ALARM or LOJACK

Only thing about GPS is apparently you can throw something over the bike (some sort of blanket with a liner that blocks GPS) and not worry about being tracked. Not sure how accurate the report is, bu tI'm sur eI read it in on eof the Brit mags when they were testing various alarm systems.

Re: BETTER THAN AN ALARM or LOJACK

The BikeBANDIT doesn't require any service fee other than than the GSM sim card and associated mobile phone costs. It will also give you details on location based upon GSM info which in many cases is just as good as GPS.

Re: BETTER THAN AN ALARM or LOJACK

Back when my bike was stolen, I looked into several means of tracking. I even went as far as getting a HAM license so that I could legally use APRS. Ultimately, though, I realized that which others have mentioned - any conventional/available transponder system is easily defeated. Yes, there are dumb crooks, but most of them are doing time, which leaves the smarter ones out there, casing our rides.

Re: BETTER THAN AN ALARM or LOJACK

But security is not about guaranteeing that your bike will not be stolen (as a couple of people have pointed out, its just not possible to do that), its about making it just that little bit harder than the guy next door, slowing them down, or making sure the amateurs are cut out of the equation.

For me having that extra layer of the GPS system is one more layer they have to think about to get to my bike. Sure it’s not perfect but its a step in the right direction.

If I come outside on day and find the bike gone then I have the hope of the GPS getting it back if that fails then at least I know I've done as much as I could to hang onto my bike. If they get around at the security layers then I fall back on the insurance, I I can't keep my baby, I guess I'll just have to get a new one.

In addition the HISS system and the GPS alarm has a positive effect on my insurance premiums, which will result in it playing itself off in a few years.

And as a final bonus, the GPS system is a pretty cool gadget.

Re: BETTER THAN AN ALARM or LOJACK

I have installed many of these and considered doing it on my bike. The cellular link, size of the unit, power consumption and need for an additional alarm to take full advantage of it were the CONS I came up with. I figured i could just plug into a trickle charger every night, so instead I decided to alarm my detatched garage, add security lighting, lock my fence at night and feed my Akita less. Eventually these units will be completely Sat based and the size of a PDA.

I agree whole-heartedly with you, if they want your bike, they will get it. This example http://www.motorcyclenews.com/news/d...umentID=197752 shows how easily all of the systems can be bypassed (INCLUDING GPS - can't track it from inside a van).

Alarms may keep some away as locks will but bottom line is the pros get what they want.

Is this the article you were refering to, I can't find anything in it about bypassing GPS systems. But I think I will start doing the paslock through the chain idea, pretty simple and he said that that was a major hassle so it looks good.
