Man, talking about "riding it out"! I did something similar on a YZ250 once, but I launched straight up toward the moon. Hung on 'til I was on the way down from about 10 feet. Yes, it hurt

Under normal circumstances letting go of the bike is a good idea. I've been told though (never tested myself), that when highsiding, it's better to hold on for a short while so you don't get pitched. Again, I didn't test this with my highside, but I watched Duhamel hold on and he didn't get thrown near as far as he otherwise would have.
