| WSMC report. Turn 8...got it got it...don't got it...sparks sky dirt sky dirt....ouch Well needless to say this weekend was a TERRIBLE weekend at WSMC for many people. There were the most crashes I've seen this weekend. Far too many. At least 4 people went down in 8 and 1 in 9. Plus a tragedy in 1. My thoughts and prayers go out to the riders friends and family. It is a very sad day indeed.
After the turn 1 incident the day was very somber. My incident in 8 made it even worse for me with my wife watching from the Budweiser balcony. I'd debated changing my front tire for a new one but decided not to and run it as it was....ended up to be not the brightest move I've made in my life.
Was gridded 2nd and had a TERRIBLE start with my bike hesitating badly under acceleration (had problems earlier). Went into turn 1 in 6. Passed a guy in turn 2 and then on the inside in 3, putting myself in 4th. I then set my sites on being smooth and consistant and hopefully that would be enough to catch the next 3.
Entered into 8 and was feeling decent with the wind blowing pretty hard. Was midway through going I'd guess between 130-140 and all of a sudden just felt the front tucknext thing I know I'm sliding on my side watching sparks flying through the sky while feeling my side begin to heat up as I slid along the track....eased more onto my back and at about that time I hit the dirt head first....it was then sky...dirt...sky dirt.. for it seemed forever....came to rest with the breath knocked out and my foot killing me. I layed there a while trying to collect myself and take mental note of my body. Everything seemed to move so I was glad about that. Layed there a bit more and then tried to get up.
Made it to all fours and couldn't get up. After a bit on all fours made it up, signaled I was kinda ok and limped behind the orange barriers pissed off as heck wishing I'd spent the $ on the new front tire....
EMT showed up as I'd layed there for a while without moving and asked me how I was...ok....hurting? Yea...my foot is bothering me but other than that not too bad considering. Asked where I was...said Willow Spring...and it's fathers day...He laughed and said and you're a bit pissed right? I laughed and said yea...just a bit. Loaded up and brought it back to the pits where the wife was pretty shaken and my 4 yr old daughter was pretty confused with mommy crying like that.
After all that I'll have L:arry take a look at the foot tomorrow as the top of my foot hurts to walk on it and it's a bit swollen. Gear did it's job perfectly! Absolutely NO rash whatsoever. One small friction burn smaller than a dime on my right knee. Back is a bit sore between my shoulders as i took a pretty good hit there. I'm pretty sure if I hadn't been wearing the Alpinestar tech series (or other good brand) back protector I'd probably have a broken back at this time. I'll take pics of the gear later.
I've included a pic of the bike.
All I can say is THANK GOD I'm relatively all right after such a high speed crash.
Thanks to Axel, Tommy and all the others that helped afterwards, you guys are the best!!!
Lesson learned...new front tire is way less costly than a turn 8 crash!
Again, My thoughts and prayers with the friends and family of the rider in turn 1. God speed sir!

I don't know all the dr talk...but one of the many bones in the top of the foot is broken off and he believes the main ligament in there that supports the whole foot is damaged from the dislocation. Usually they go in and pin it and cast it for 8 weeks, but he's going to try the cast for a couple weeks and see how that does as it's not as bad as it could have been.
I'm trying to figure out if I can get by the guards on base without a boot on that foot! |
