I hit my head this weekend at the track so the spelling might not be that great you will see.
This race weekend was not the best for me well the part I rember. I got my suspension back on Wednesday before this race weekend I had Friday off and I wanted to get up to the track for Friday practice to do some tweaking to the set-up. Well I didn’t get there till Friday night I picked up Rodney, and meet up with Mike unloaded the truck then fell asleep watching the movie Faster. Saturday morning through three session of practice I’m running high 33 low 34 about two seconds slower than normal but still feeling out the changes to the suspension. I dicided to do the Saturday Solo Gt-Gp 20min race to get some more track time at a race pace. There was only 8 entries in this race so I knew that it should allow for a lot of open track where I could work on getting into a rhythm and maybe dropping lap my lap times under a 1:30. You have to run under a 1:30 just to qualify for Formula two on Sunday.
I was using this race as practice time, but when the flag dropped I went into race mode getting one of my best starts ever going from 8th on the grid to 4th by turn 1. I see John Ulrich, Mark Wilson, & Jamie Lenore a head of me I knew I should be able to get past Jamie on power because he is on a Aprillia cup bike and after one lap I was able to do that. I then set out to real in Mark I guess Jay Pilster on a 125 was right on my tail the whole time and came blazing by me in turn 9 WOW! I was able to buzz back past him down the straight and put a gap between us and get closer to Mark in second. One lap four I was in striking distance I wanted to get close enough to draft and pass on the last lap but keep enough distance for him to feel that he had a large lead. Turn 2 I was caring good speed but start to feel the peg scraping so I try to sit up a little and counter steer a little more because I’m running out of track not good. I sit the bike up straight and go the track riding the rear brake and fish tailing like crazy. I knew that if I could just get the bike to stop I could still get third place this is where it all goes wrong like a IDIOT I touch the front brake and do a superman over the bike knocking my self completely out. The next thing I rember is coming out of the toy box trailer asking my Teammate Rodney did I get third? He said I repeted the same process abut 10-12 times.
There is a time period of 30-45min that I don’t rember I don’t rember talking to the EMT or the corner workers or how I got back to the trailer. I felt like someone was pushing a reset button on my brain. I kept going into the trailer looking for my 3rd place trophy to no avail I kept asking what happened Rodney kept giving me water and telling me to sit he hell down. I after another hour I think? I knew I crashed in turn two and I did not get third place. I got to look at the bike just some scratches and a bent peg, but I could ride it thanks to Rodney’s patchwork. I went over to the race office to see how the rest of the field did only 4 of the 8 finished the race. I get really pissed to see Mark DNF also I could have had and easy second. We closed down shop and went to get dinner came got back to the paddock and buzzed around on the pocket bike, and went to bed watching Faster again.
Sunday morning I get up at 6 give the bike a look over get through tech and pass. I mix some fuel and check my tire pressure put the warmers on get ready for morning practice
My thumb is very swollen and it very hard just to get the glove on. I get out for practice and just trying to get into a rhythm I must have been listening to a slow love ballet in my mind because my rhythm was about 5-6 seconds slower that Saturday practice running 38-40 the problem was not the bike or the tires it was me. After the riders meeting I went to get some new tires the ones I hade on were in good shape, but I wanted to use them for the track day I signed up for the following Saturday. I was limited to one race for Sunday the 250gp and since I could not get under a 1:30 this weekend no Formula 2 for me. I was girded 12th out of 16 racers.
Sunday was a crash fest in the three years I’ve been going up to Willow I’ve never seen so many crashes one
ending a young mans life
. I try to just relax till my race #11 on the schedule. My normal bad start has me last going into T1 I work my way through trafick
One lap goes by and I’m in 10th by lap two I’m in 8th and lap three the half way mark I’m 5th where I remain till the checkered flag. This weekend had its up and really down moments. I walked away with 16 points to add to my run for the Top Rookie Standings for a total of 21 points. So maybe I will move up from 10 to somewhere in the top 5.
Thanks to Mike, and Rodney for their help this weekend
