I went to two track days in a row at pacific raceways wednesday and yesterday. Yesterday was number 10 since I bought my bike in July 2001. The 929 was my first bike (unless you count a 1985 700cc Honda Magna). I rode it 18K miles on the street before turning to the track last year and I haven't gone back to the street since.
Yesterday was a NESBA day and I hooked up with Mike Castro (control rider) for most of the day. He gave me and a buddy of mine some really good advice. I was able to improve my lap times signifcantly over the last two days. Mike is unbelievably fast...
But there was one mishap... I was passing a guy on the outside in turn 9 and as I exited 9 to enter turn 10 (aka The Bus Stop) I found myself coming in too hot. I stood the bike up and tried to scrub off as much speed as I could hoping I would at least be able to cut the corner off. Unfortunately, the "corner" ended up being deep sand and gravel. As soon as my front wheel hit the dirt, the bike threw me off and I found myself on the ground. I can't believe how fast it happened. I was literally on the ground before I knew what happened. I really thought I would be able to ride it out.
I landed on my right side on my ribs and forearm/shoulder. My ribs, forearm and shoulder are bruised but nothing broken (as far as I know). I had full gear on head-to-toe. It was a pretty low speed wreck in the dirt. Nothing major
I immediately brought the bike back to pits, removed the lowers, dumped out the dirt and gravel and took the bike to tech to go back out. The only thing that broke on the bike was the rear brake lever. The next session I made my best lap time.
It was a stupid mistake on my part. I should have just been patient and passed the guy on the straight. I was just getting impatient and it cost me. It was a learning experience...
This is my first time wrecking a bike... I hope it doesn't happen again because, DAMN, even the low speed wrecks hurt
