Safety Wiring

I'm working on getting my 954 all wired. Can someone post a pic or try to explain how I'm supposed to wire the header bolts? The "nuts" that go onto the studs look to be too thin to drill, and there isn't enough excess at the end to drill either.

I've had a hell of a time today. I've gone through about 10 titanium bits already!!!!

Man what a PIA.

Re: Safety Wiring

You're safety wiring the bike you're going to sell?

What is the Team Heavy-Fear racing schedule for next weekend? I want to try to be there to watch.

I have to wire it for the race school on Saturday. Believe me I'm not happy about it.

Race school is Saturday morning. Race starts at 3. Sounds like we are going to have quite a lot of "pit crew".

Hope you can make it.

Re: Safety Wiring

You have to wire your header bolts for a race school? I thought most just required the basics to be wired. Oil Fill Cap, Oil Filter, Oil Drain Plug?

Also, I'd replace all the drilled nuts with new ones before selling it. It tends to turn people off, I've found. (Unless you're selling it as a track bike.)

Aparently I do. The idea being that it is a "race" school and the bike I'm learning should be fit to race.

They seem a bit overboard. You have to wire the cam chain tensioner too?

I'm new to this racing thing so I wouldn't really know. I'd like to think that I could still get through tech (Grattan) w/o having done them, but I don't want to take the chance. Any input from you Grattan locals would help me out.

I'm thinking of drilling a hole in the flange and wiring that. At least if all the nuts fell off the wire would (in theory) hold the exhaust up....maybe. ....not.

Re: Safety Wiring

When did Fasttrax become a racing organization?
Get a hold of the rules from a real race sanctioning body, and wire to their specs. Then sign up for their race school instead.

Admittedly, Fasttrax has some issues that should be addressed. However, It can only be good for everyone to have another racing organization "in the mix". Therefore I don't feel bad supporting them. Furthermore, they are affiliated w/ CCS and WERA, so after taking this school I can pay to get my WERA license. THe CCS license is included w/ what I have already paid. I'm taking this class in two parts and this is the second part. Since the first was at a "home track" and there were much fewer people there, tech was "lenient" the first time around. However, since the difference between Nelson and Grattan is like the difference between the crappy service at the stealer and Dan Kyle, I'd expect that I need to have my ducks in a row for this one.

Re: Safety Wiring

Neither CCS nor WERA require header bolts to be wired.
I think they're just on a power trip. If you are truly supposed to have a bike that is 'fit to race', not "wired to our over-stringent for any sanctioning body standards", then you should be fine without the worry of screwing up your headers.
I thought that MRA tech inspection was tough, but this is laughable.

Not coming down on you, just trying to add some insight.

Re: Safety Wiring

Header bolts to start.

I've also never heard of the tensioner having to be wired. I've wired my bike for 3 organizations, and worked on a few bikes as well as taken them through WSMC and AMA Pro tech inspections.

Here's what I wire:

Oil pan bolt
oil filter
caliper bolts
rad clamps

Dabs of silicone on:
coolant drain bolt
muffler clamp bolt
timing window cover

That's all I can think of...

Planning on being there Friday night. Jim wants to be there around 3ish and I'll be there around 5.

Dave- It would be great to see ya again. I'm planning on hooking up with Jim (Trackaholics) sometime Friday afternoon and unloading in a gargage (hopefully). I think Heavy is planning on getting up there Friday as well.

Re: Safety Wiring

You just never know with Fasttrax. I ran 2 of their events and the tech at the first one was pretty anal (I have my header bolts wired) and they made me redo my "quick release safety wire" that I use on the radiator cap even though he (the tech inspector) couldn't move the cap without undoing the loop. The same guy at the second one was talking to someone else the entire time he was "inspecting" my bike and the entire "inspection" consisted of a squeeze on the front brake and asking me where I wanted the sticker placed . . .
