Re: SV-650 vs RC51 for amateur club racing and track days

I

It gets annoying working hard to get around people in corners and then have them blow by on the straights... I've said that like ten times now... I'll stop there

The new 600's and up just get a huge lead on the long straights...

Don't get me wrong, I loved the SV... It was fun to just whack open the throttle and pretty much keep it pinned. Not so much thinking involved there I dunno... Still pondering this one...

It may come down to what is a good deal when it comes time for me to make a purchase.

I hear ya about 600s... I forgot you'd want to race some too. I was thinking just trackdays...

Just FYI. You'll have to work really hard to outrun a 2002 or newer 600 on even a nicely modded RC51. Unless you are abtech or something...

hrm... which I am not...

But... I had no trouble getting past most folks on the sv... Oh who knows what I'll do...

That new gixxer 600 is pretty sweet

Trauma - I've noticed that people get just as tired of being passed by a small bike in the corners every lap as the you get tired of being passed on the straights. After a while they'll just let you go ( speaking of track days only) If not, just think of it as re-setting the target.

If you really just want clear track, pull off at the pit and re-enter.

I seldom get passed in the corner by anything (sometimes on entry but that is breaking) Of course I expect that to change when I jump up a group this year

It's all about the drive. I loved to run the 250s in the GTO on Saturdays (except for the start) and outdrive the liter bikes down the straights. There were more than a couple of SV pilots that did the same thing on a regular basis. Anyone running 25s at Grattan on any bike is going to do well and in GLRRA the top 5 SVs all circulated in the minute 25 to 26 range.

I'm pretty sure I could run a 2:25 there. So that's good?

That would get you out of racing middleweights for the most part. Although I know several 600s that race in heavyweight and unlimited as well. I honestly don't know what the grids look like for the heavyweights. That may be a good option.

Hmm.. I guess that would put the gsxr 750 in the same class as the RC... except the rc can also run in supertwins.

that may be good option. Plus assuming I have skilzz I can keep ahead of the liter bikes at track days.

I ran HW with the RC. Actually wasn't too bad, though the Gixxers would definitely eat your lunch. Less chaos than the middleweights at least.

what else did you run the RC in? The supertwins? The gixxer750 would also be able to run unlimeted fairly well, again I have no idea how crazy that group is...

If I was in the market for a track day/occasional race, the 750 is the ticket.

I didn't think corner passing was aloud in the grazing group.

I'm going to think on this one... that does seem to fit the bill of what I am looking for.

Problem is I would want one of the new ones, and it will be a year before they start showing up on the boards... of course that may be when I am ready to purchase anyway...

Yes, I ran HW Supersport and Superbike, plus Supertwins. As an every-once-in-a-while racer, I really don't think you'd go wrong with any suggestion other than maybe a 600 (to avoid meatgrinder class).

I think you are right...

I'd be interested if abtech has an opinion on what he sees in general in the heavyweight classes... boneheads vs fewer boneheads...
