Lowside Common Themes

Reading the lowside stories that have happened over the past month, I've noticed a common theme: poor body position.

For those able to go to Grattan, it might be well worth the monetary savings to get the more experienced riders to give a quick class or two, or a little one on one on the track (if there's time) to try to correct those errors early in the day.

Just food for thought for those lucky enough to be able to get to Grattan this year.

Re: Lowside Common Themes

work on it on the street also. body position can be worked on anytime even at street speeds. who cares if you lean off a bunch on the street and basically have the bike upright in a turn. you don't have to be trying to put your knee on the ground or anything. Just get used to moving around in the seat.

Re: Lowside Common Themes

Nice idea. I have heard of cops giving people a hard time for doing that: Leaning off the seat, not even close to the ground. But then again, I have only heard.
Any opinions on that?

I doubt there's any laws against it. and who cares if you look stupid hanging off a bike at 30mph 2 feet away from the ground. I've done it. I say go for it.

Re: Lowside Common Themes

I know I need to improve that and foot position (my two largest screw ups in my opinion) Pointers are welcome at Grattan.

Does this mean you or the Ms are coming Seamus?

Re: Lowside Common Themes

Body position is a big factor and not necessarily for the obvious reason (moving the CG to go around a corner with less lean angle).

Proper body position requires proper foot position and being smooth during the transition from one side of the bike to the other. If you pivot around the tank from side to side, you are keeping your weight well forward and causing the smallest amount of external influence to the bike which can and will upset it while heading for the apex.

If you break body positioning down into it's component parts and work on each component individually you will be better able to accomplish something that may seem drastic at first, but become second nature over a short period of time.

Without getting into a dissertation on downshifting and trail braking, I would say the components are as follows (in a loose order):

1: Approach the corner and start your downshifting/braking
Note: Do not lock your arms, but keep them loose and bent at the elbows and make certain you are "toes only" on the pegs.

2: Put your leading shoulder forward (inside shoulder)

3: Slide around the tank (pivoting) to the point where you get 1 cheek totally off the seat

4: Throw it in (countersteer to begin turn in) and begin the transition to no brakes and neutral throttle

5: As you approach (and reach) the apex (and full lean) begin picking up the throttle very smoothly

6: The bike will begin to stand back up under throttle, so you pivot back to neutral (or other side in a transition) again as smoothly as possible

Put all of these together until it becomes one fluid motion and you will minimize loosing the front end on corner entry. Avoid any sudden brake or throttle changes mid corner as these will either overload or unload the front tire.

You forgot:
4.5) throw your foot out as if you're gonna catch the bike and go flat-track style.
Hey, if it works for Rossi and Pedrosa it should work for me, right?

My eyes aren't that bad, I can read the label without clicking just fine.
That's old news. Remember Wasatch is a local brewery, and they have billboards everywhere. That's one of their old mixes.
I'd come up with a jab for you, but I'm not witty enough.

I've been doing just that. Haven't passed Johnny Law while doing yet but did get a wild stare from the FT Sill gate guards. There's an exit ramp that leads right to one of the main gates.
