searching for a race bike

I finally decided to search for a race/track bike. Does anyone have any links to local or national forums with classified sections. Thanks

I'd like an I4 600 any brand. Or maybe an SV, although I'm not sure how competitive they would be. Price is my biggest concern. Watcha got?

SV is competitive with other SV's, which is what you'd be racing if you raced an SV.

Re: searching for a race bike

Tigerblade,
I'm new to racing, my plan is to race Novice GTO and GTU. Against I4's an SV would not be competitive. I'm not sure if this club has a Vtwin class? Can you give me some more info.

Re: searching for a race bike

Are you not planning to run any sprint races at all? What organization (CCS, WERA, etc.)? I'm convinced you can't beat an SV for a first racebike.

Re: searching for a race bike

I will be racing in the MRA (club in Denver). They don't have Novice supertwin, only expert GTO and GTU. I'm still kind of confused about classes.

Re: searching for a race bike

I've raced with the MRA quite a bit. They differ from the CCS and other orgs in that the novice and amateurs are really limited in classes. There are all the normal classes (supersport, superbike, grand prix, etc.) available once you get an expert license, but until then the novices are limited in the races they can enter.
There is an online rulebook at http://www.mra-racing.org/.
I'd agree that starting out with an SV is a typically a good idea before moving to another class, however there really isn't a lot you can do with it in the MRA unfortunately. In his situation, I would recommend picking up an old F3, F4 or GSXR as they are very cheap, spare parts are everywhere and they can be competetive once you get your skill up. Run it for a couple years, then look at getting something newer such as an R6 or 600RR.

Interesting. Does sound like you're somewhat limited as far a classes go. BDA gave good advice.

There are quite a few racers from Utah that head that direction. The tracks are closer than most CCS or AFM tracks. Depending on which track the trip takes 6-10 hours tops.

BDA,
What class do you recommend starting in. I would like to start in a class with the least amount of people possible. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I heard some one say that a year ago the SV classes in Cali had like 15 people in them and now they have like 30. Crazy.

Just run the GTU for a few race weekends until you get the hang of things. Then add the GTO for the experience and for getting you expert license. GTU can get pretty crowded, but most of the same guys end up in the GTO also - where there are bigger bore bikes to contend with too.
You'll get the hang of other riders pretty quickly in practice anyway.

CMRA is affiliated with CCS. The bike needs a cylinder head since it dropped a valve at Daytona but I have found two of them. Havent had time to go through them yet but expect to have it running with very little effort. If it sounds like something you might want more info on let me know. It is fully race prepped and has some good parts.

Okc, Ok and the price is $2300. No spares since that is how I bought it. Has the following on it:ZG windscreen, race plastic painted black with yellow amateur # plates, Protek rearsets, braided lines, Vortex triple clamp, Michelin M2/H2 tires, Traxxion worked forks, and what I believe to be an older Yosh exhaust.

CMRA Issues Official Statement On Split With CCS

From a press release issued by CMRA:

In a meeting held on June 7, 2003, the CMRA's Board of Directors voted unanimously to return to Independent status after four years as a CCS affiliate. This decision has been explored extensively over the past two years in columns printed in the monthly newsletter, The Inside Line, and on the club's message board. The decision was reached after a number of meetings with CCS failed to resolve issues that the CMRA had raised. There are certainly few people involved in the sport of Amateur road racing who are as committed to the advancement of the sport as CCS' Kevin Elliott. Hopefully we will find an opportunity for our two organizations to participate on the racetrack at some point in the future.

The return to Independent status comes after a series of accomplishments by the CMRA over a two-year period. A new Club Secretary, Race Director and a new Editor for the newsletter have been hired, the conversion to GAP accounting reports accomplished, the establishment of the CMRA Hall of Fame (Colin Edwards and Kevin Schwantz were the first inductees), purchase of Airfence, repaving of Oak Hill Raceway, the purchase of a new AMB timing/scoring system and a cash contingency program that has grown by more than $50,000 are evidence that the club is strong and getting stronger. Race entries are at an all-time high and the CMRA's development of a Motard series that reaches youngsters of ages 8 to 12 provides entry-level opportunities to get the next generations on the track.

The goal of the return to Independent status is to provide an even greater value to CMRA members and to the road racing community, in general.

Preliminary conversations with others in the club road racing business provide encouragement that there will greater flexibility in regards to out-of-region and end-of-the-season competition. It is the CMRA's desire to see these kinds of reciprocal opportunities granted to amateur road racers regardless of affiliation. This requires a whole different way of thinking but change can be good and in this case, what is good for the rider is good for the sport. Further details on the rulebook for 2004 and the programs to be offered will be announced in the near future.

Brooks Gremmels
President, CMRA
