The mail continues to pour in on this--we received over 150 e-mail messages in under one hour this morning, and have something like 400 of them now. Unfortunetly we cannot run every one of them. We're trying to get a variety of viewpoints presented here, but have yet to recieve one with a positive reflection of Yates or the incident. -- Editor |

What a joke. I agree with 929flyer, if Fania had done it to Yates, he'd be gone before he could get his bike from the crash truck. But since it's Yates, they think missing one freakin' weekend will "send a message".

And it looks like Faria might get hit too: Barrick also noted that AMA Pro Racing continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the actions of each rider's crew members following the incident. |

Tom | Is Fontana one or two superbike races? That's a lot of potential championship points...hopefully it will leave a mark. |

| Re: (SPOILER!) Daytona 200 Race Where does Yoshimura Suzuki keep the AMA's balls?
I just received my renewal notice last week. Great timing for me. As a result of this spineless action, I sent the following to shollingsworth, mvanderslice and rbarrick all @amaproracing.com:
I am writing this in response to the pathetic display provided by Aaron Yates during the Daytona event and the equally pathetic “disciplinary action” taken by the AMA.
Even if you want to disregard Yates’ history of unsportsmanlike behavior and dangerous riding, this action is completely unacceptable. Yates has single-handedly ruined the championship run for Eric Bostrom last year through his hideous riding and a few years prior did the same to Aaron Slight in the World Superbike race. Aaron Yates is a complete disappointment to the sport of Superbike racing and the skewed views riders from other series already have of AMA riders.
According to Chapter 4, section A of the AMA rulebook, the riders are fully responsible for their crew. What the Yoshimura team did to Mr. Fania’s after Yates took out and attacked Mr. Fania was equally unacceptable.
Yates is also in violation of Chapter 4, section b point 1, point 3 sections I, j, q and w.
To suspend him for one event and a measly $5,000 fine shows that the AMA doesn’t care one whit about privateer efforts or their own rules when applied to certain factory riders.
As a club racer for years, I find what happened beyond belief. What if Mr. Fania had sustained a slight injury and Yates’ actions complicated said minor injury? What if Mr.Fania were no longer able to walk as a result of Yates’ actions?
Would what happened be any different? The disciplinary action should reflect what could have happened to Mr.Fania as a result of the pathetic crybaby Yates and his actions.
What if Mr.Fania had attacked Yates? The penalty would be much more severe for sure.
However, I am quite pleased with the timing of my renewal letter from the AMA. Because you are all a bunch of spineless idiots that are unable to stand up to Aaron Yates, and allow him to both destroy the bike of a racer that actually put money out of his own pocket for his efforts – as well as the possibility of disabling said racer, and contribute to the negativity many have of motorcycle racing, I am not renewing my membership.
The cons of renewing definitely outweigh the pros, and I doubt I will ever re-join a club that so spinelessly protects certain classes, yet cares not for others.
Signed,
ME.
I doubt it will do any good, but what the hell. |

But on a serious note.... still hard to believe the splineless AMA ass-clowns actually stated this tripe: "After carefully reviewing the tapes and interviewing the corner workers and both Mr. Yates and Mr. Fania, we have concluded that the contact that resulted in both riders crashing was an unfortunate racing incident with neither rider specifically at fault,"
"neither rider specifically at fault"...?! Say whaaaaat?! YGTBSM..... what a joke.... |

PICKERINGTON, Ohio (March 9, 2004) -- Yoshimura Suzuki rider Aaron Yates has been suspended for one race meet and fined $5,000 by AMA Pro Racing for his actions following an on-track incident with KWS Racing's Anthony Fania during the Daytona 200 by Arai on Saturday, March 6.
In announcing the penalty, AMA Pro Racing Road Race Manager, Ron Barrick stated that Yates' behavior after the two collided was completely unacceptable. "After carefully reviewing the tapes and interviewing the corner workers and both Mr. Yates and Mr. Fania, we have concluded that the contact that resulted in both riders crashing was an unfortunate racing incident with neither rider specifically at fault," said Barrick. "However, Yates' actions after the crash are the reason we are issuing the fine and suspension."
TV video tape, interviews with the riders and interviews with corner workers confirmed that Yates kicked and head-butted Fania immediately after the crash. While it was impossible to discern what each rider said during the exchange, it was apparent that Fania was attempting to walk away from the altercation.
Barrick confirmed that Yates' AMA license is suspended for a period of one AMA Superbike race meet; specifically the California Speedway event scheduled for April 2-4, 2004 in Fontana, California. Yates will not be permitted to compete in any of the races that make up that race meet. Barrick also stated that the $5,000 fine could be reduced by 50% if Yates enters an anger management treatment program, approved by AMA Pro Racing, prior to returning to competition.
"Physically assaulting a fellow competitor cannot be tolerated under any circumstance," said Barrick. "This penalty should indicate how seriously we are taking this matter."
Barrick also noted that AMA Pro Racing continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the actions of each rider's crew members following the incident.

Another Perspective: *
You can watch a hundred FIM Superbike races and you might see the leaders encounter an oblivious backmarker once. It's rare because in the World Superbike Championships boneheads are heavily discouraged. In AMA Superbike competition, it's the odd race where a backmarker doesn't affect the outcome. There's no excuse for Yates' behavior at Daytona, but there needs to be change regarding the AMA's use of the Blue Flag and in the mind of the lapped riders where, instead of yielding to the race leaders, they decide now's their time to compete.
Yates' behavior can not go unpunished by the AMA. However anyone who's watched a few AMA Superbike races can describe a similar incident where a backmarker, as they're about to be lapped by the leaders, decides they're going to pick up their pace and try to stay ahead of the factory riders. The usual outcome is the backmarker gets into the next corner way too hot and can't control their bike. Just like Fania at Daytona.
Dear Backmarkers: Wake TF up! When you're being lapped by a factory rider, that doesn't give you instant superpowers. You're still the same rider that qualified five seconds off the pace. You still have the same bike, the same tires and the same skills. Nothing gets magically upgraded simply because you're in the vicinity of a factory bike on the racetrack.
In this case, Fania had already been Lapped FOUR TIMES. So why is he trying to race with Yates? Watching these guys is like watching a Road Runner cartoon. They're Wiley Coyote riding the Acme Special and when they're about to be lapped you can see the little dim bulb come on and hear the Morse code beeps: ... must ... go... faster.
And the next thing you know they're ten yards past their normal braking marker and heading for the inevitable splat.
It's the rarest event in World Superbike racing, but it's an every day occurrence on the AMA circuit. In any World Championship event, the slower riders know there's no magic aura around a factory bike. WSC backmarkers are paying attention and you see them back-off just slightly, and allow the leaders to pass without incident. This behavior needs to receive positive reinforcement in AMA Superbike, while the backmarker-as-race-spoiler needs to be heavily discouraged.
Mistakes are repeated until the obvious lesson is learned. Yates' reaction was 100% wrong, but there's a more important and obvious lesson that continues to be ignored.
