| Re: The chatter continues into '05 and HRC looks mystified Maybe Honda should build their bikes with adjustable swingarm pivots, and adjustable steering head angles - so rather than building a new chassis each time they wanna test new geometry, they can just give the mechanics 10 minutes with some tools - like every other team...

| Re: The chatter continues into '05 and HRC looks mystified Actually, to me it seems like the classical japanese thinking of "Factory setting is always correct"may be hindering progress. This, of course, did not come to me thanks to my incredible knowledge of Moto GP machines (or more like the lack of it) just from what I have read from various different outlets, and read the reports form people who have actually ridden the GP bikes (something I can only ever dream of).
Quite a few years back, I remember reading an article about just such a thing - I can't remember the team or rider, but the article was kinda amusing.
Basically, said rider for Japanese team spent a lot of time convincing team bosses to allow him to make changes to suspension settings etc, finally, bosses agreed, his times dropped, he went from mid pack to 3rd qualifying spot.
Just as he was getting ready for the race, he noticed, to his horror, that all settings had been changed back to stock for the race. when he asked the team bosses, the answer was "must race bike on factory setting". He finished the race in the bottom half of the field.
I do believe this was article referred to an incident in the late 70's or early 80's, but I can't help getting the feeling Honda has the "Factory knows best all the time" mentality.

Z... | I don't think it's that straightforward.....
This is an aspect of any design program. There are two paths:
* Build in adjustability - and increase the available matrix of solutions in the field.
* Build iterations of the matrix - and "possibly" increase the time to realize a solution.
A design team is challenged to choose the path that leverages the "tools" at their disposal. Some teams have better technical resources, and some have better tuning resources....so the opposite approach would work for the respective team. Neither approach is right or wrong....

| Re: The chatter continues into '05 and HRC looks mystified I don't agree. I think Honda have ONLY done well when they have had someone that won't take their "heads up their own arses" attitude, and will ONLY work with what works. Doohan was great coz he told Honda to jam their new parts until the people using them were beating him. Never happened funnily enough. So I can't see Honda being the genius's THEY think they are. Rossi was the same to a similar extent. He also said the RCV was crap until him and Burgess sorted it out, and even then, he only TRIED new parts in testing or practice, and used the "old" bike for the race. Honda will just go further down hill until they start listeneing to their riders. A Yamaha tech from the year before last said the same about Yamaha. He said that in 03, they ONLY went off the laptop, and other computer diagnosis, but in 04, they listened to Rossi first and THEN backed that up or compared it to the data. I don't doubt that Honda will have the most powerful bike on the grid this year, but it won't win. Haha |

| Re: The chatter continues into '05 and HRC looks mystified Glad to be of service Bake. Haha I wasn't meaning Honda in general, but their racing division, as proved last year, isn't what THEY think it is |
