MotoGP - Flag to Flag in 05!?!?!

Sorry if I missed it, but this is big news for 05...
Full Story on Soup
Quote:
One of the major rule changes for 2005 in the MotoGP class of Grand Prix racing is the introduction of the "flag-to-flag" wet-weather race ruling. There will now be no race stoppages in the event of rainfall during a race. The implications of this rule change are not just being felt at Dorna HQ, but at the factory headquarters around the world and in the garages up and down pit-lane.

I don't necessarily like that. What if the conditions are too dangerous? It's foolish to endanger the racer's safety even more

It seems that they could do pit stops to put on wet weather tires under a green flag. Sounds good to me!

I can't imagine what those guys are going to do if they have to keep riding 200+hp bikes with slicks in the rain.

When I read the original published ruling a few months ago, all Dorna said was "flag to flag" so I don't think either will 'call it' so to speak. The riders that want to risk their lives will keep riding with slicks, anyone else can pit and swap tires, crazy ****.

Re: MotoGP - Flag to Flag in 05!?!?!

I'd rather see a restart, the old way.

Obviously this new standard is for the TV, that way the race isn't delayed. That was their main objective in changing the rule.

The HRC helos seeded the clouds so Nicky could get his good bike out of the pits.. I mean, so Dani could use those really special rain tires. Or something. Dan Brown will have a book out on this in a week or so.

Re: MotoGP - Flag to Flag in 05!?!?!

I thought it worked pretty well overall. Kinda rewards the big teams with big budgets but this is motoGP, not wera...

I'd like to see the situation where upon race start, it is called a wet or dry race (I believe this is how it was before). If it is a dry race and it starts raining, red flag the race, allow a restart on THE SAME BIKE, but with wets... If it is started as a wet race, then part of the strategy is do you start on a set of wets, intermediates or slicks? Whether it rains or not, the race is not stopped until all laps are complete...

That doesn't address the brake rotor issue though...

I do agree that it seemed to work better than expected...I just wished the announcers had been a little more on top of the situation...

Anyone think the backmarkers could have earned some points if they'd run with rains from the beginning?

How many dry laps were there before everyone pitted?

Nah, Colin still would have crashed out.

I think the big mess of them all came in on lap 6.

Ya, they probably would have lost too much time running the 6 dry laps on rain tires to make it back by not pitting... Those were fast pit stops.
