In a surprise move, five-time AMA Superbike champion Mat Mladin said today that he will not be racing at the upcoming Barber round of the US Superbike series. Mladin has decided to park his Superbike and will instead be assisting Ducati Austin's Eric Bostrom return to competitiveness. Bostrom, a bitter rival of Mladin's for years, has endured a slow road to the front of the pack since being injured on the Ducati last season.
This landmark gesture of generosity and kindness is virtually unparalleled in racing. Mladin says it's based in his own unselfish desire to help his fellow racer. "I'm out on the track and I see Eric and I'm yelling in my helmet, 'For God's sake man. Dinosaurs died to make the fuel in that bike; don't let their deaths be in vain.' Then I thought. maybe I should try to help the poor bloke."
Mladin said that he'll "coach" Bostrom the way he was "coached" by his crew, Peter Doyle and Reg O'Rourke.
"Back in Australia," Mladin explained, "when I'd complain about how the front end was feelin' a little funny, or maybe the tire didn't have the grip I wanted, Reg and Pete would say they had a cure for that in the back of the truck, and I'd go back there with them. It wasn't after but a few of those 'coaching sessions' that the front end felt fine, and I loved any tire they put on the bike.'
"When you're ridin' and you have to wonder whether you'll be hurt worse if you crash or in the post-race 'coaching session', you start going fast straight-away," Mladin added.
Eric Bostrom welcomed Mladin's help and said he'll use the time they spend together coaching Mladin as well.
"I think I'll help him smile a little more, you know? I'll probably have to start by pushing his cheeks up with my thumbs, but once we get things loosened up, we can read some funny riddles or do some Mad-libs together to get him grinning. This is going to be the bomb."
Again, this offer of help, from one professional racer to another, is unprecedented. If it comes to fruition, no one should be surprised to see peace in the Middle East, British soccer fans buying rivals fans pints, or even dogs and cats playing together in the street.
More info on this incredible breaking news story later today, which is of course April 1st.
