| Re: Haskovec Injury Update http://www.superbikeplanet.com/2005/May/050516vh.htm I think it was Gary Nixon who once said the only downside of motorcycle racing he was aware of is that sooner or later it will break your heart. What I think he meant is that from time to time motorcycle racing seems to hurt the ones that love it the most.
We've amassed quite a ream of e-mail messages today from readers wanting an update on the condition of Vincent Haskovec.
While there are no shortage of rumors regarding the condition of injured racer Vincent Haskovec, the factual info is that the extent of his most severe injury remains unknown.
Haskovec was injured in a crash during last Saturday's Formula Extreme race. He fell and impacted a wall and then was hit by his sliding motorcycle.
Haskovec suffered several injuries in the incident, including a broken collarbone, ribs, a punctured lung and other fairly serious calamities.
The press release about his condition also lists a "back injury". Reading that gave me a chilling sense of deja-vu, as that was exactly how Wayne Rainey's injury was initially described in 1993.
Credible sources say Haskovec suffered at least partial paralysis in the Saturday crash. Whether this paralysis is permanent remains to be seen. And if there is ever a time when we hope that the information presented here on 'Soup is incorrect, man, this is the day.
Surgery on Vincent will be performed this afternoon to discern the exact extent of his spinal cord injury. Credible sources say that Haskovec's spinal cord, initially, does not appear to be broken, but has suffered damage from broken vertebra fragments.
Over 500 e-mail messages wishing Vincent well have recieved, and he has been encouraged by the outpouring of concern. To send him one, click here.
More information as it comes in.

The entire Team M4 EMGO Suzuki crew thanks fans for their support of Vincent, and urges racetrack operators and motorcycle sanctioning bodies to focus on pro-actively placing soft barriers not just in front of walls that motorcycle racers have hit, but instead, in front of walls racers may hit.

AMA Assholes who just don't get it | Just FYI---Infineon (Sears Point) has invested millions of dollars in making the track ALOT safer for motorcycles in the past 3 years. The armco that Vincent ran into was orginally there tp revent bikes/cars from running into a resevoir, however a few years ago, the resevoir was drained as it is no longer used. There is really NO reason to even have it there, or at least move it back 100ft or so.
Infineon is caught in this NASCRAP/MC dilemna, NASCRAP likes walls to keep cars in, bike racing doesnt. Crashes at that particular turn couled be classified as somewhat freak, but hindsight is 20/20 and this sucks for Vincent, as the latest update sounds like he is paralyzed from the chest down (my biggest fear).
I would guess that Infineon will NOW do something about that armco--but this doesnt help Vincent. Hopefully, the paralysis is temporary, but it doesnt look that way.
This is a tough one as INfineon is arguably the most technical/fun track in the US, but its very nature lends itself to several dangers, mostly by the walls that separate the two halves of the track, the T9 chicane has been very helpful in eliminating serious injury/death in the 130MPH/0 runoff T10 scenario. Strangley enough, the AFM just started using it this season (after Jim Groshong, AFM #8 died there last year), many people bitched that massive pile-ups would occur in the chicane, but there were NONE in the last AFM race---still many people lament about the T8-T9-T10 "flow" being eliminated---go figure.
I sincerely hope that Vincent gets a break and makes a full recovery |

| Re: Haskovec Injury Update Trackho I don't know if you made it up there last weekend, but I didn't see any crashes from the AMA using the chicane Sunday either. It made for good fun as they're so hard on the brakes so close to the fence you could really see everything they were doing. Lots of stoppies...
I last raced at Sears in 2003, I'd much rather race there now. |
