Check-out this form!

I just saw this:
The Honda RC166 - 250cc with junk tires (by today's standards).
A big to who ever recognizes this early knee-down-dude.

Alright, smart-arse - I should have said knee OUT for the above picture.
I still say that Roberts was the first known "pro" to go knee DOWN.
Dick Mann also threw his knees around, but I don't think he went DOWN with them.

So there -

Mike the Bike in 1967 @ Clermont Ferrand on the six cylinder RC166 Honda, his style was knee out not knee down, the bikes & tyres then did not require or encourage knee down styles though Renzo Pasolini riding the 250cc Benelli 4 at Brands Hatch in 1968 did it consistently round Druids hairpin, another spctacular racer from the early 1970s was Jarno Saarinen who transfered his skills as an ice racer to the tarmac with spctacular results....knees elbows you name them he used them.

It was not until the advent of the 500cc 2 stroke multi that the knee down style was realy required the high horsepower, fat slicks & relatively decent chassis allowed a rider to keep the bike more upright & hence more rubber on the track & of course ushered in the era of rear wheel steering.
