| Re: Schumacher Rides Stoner's Ducati I think the report might just be a little on the sensational side of the facts. I think the whole thing was great flag waving exercise for Stoner and Ducati. At least he didn't drop the thing, now that would have made for a story.
I can see the headlines "German Scmuk Drops Italian...... |

| Re: Schumacher Rides Stoner's Ducati Yeah it is off the pace but still worthy of respect, I think we dicussed the crossover issue in another thread but based on that story it would seem he could make a go of it with practice and the right team. I think cutting a hot lap out of the gate in an F1 car would be straight out difficult. I don't know that you would get within 5 seconds of Mr Schumacher without a lot of car time. |

| From what I understand Schumacher was 13 seconds off the last time he tried this. He has had a top level coach and a lot of support to get to where he is now. It wasn't like he just decided to get on the bike and happened to be within 5 seconds. However 5 seconds is still WAY back in a GP race. Multiply 5 seconds by 30 laps. The champagne would all be gone by the time he crossed the finish line. It is still impressive and I won't even pretend to think that I could come anywhere near to doing it. It proves how good the electronics on the Ducati are. There are photos of the racers with throttle at wide open before they ever even hit the apex. The electronics and TC sort it all out and make it work. The Ducati electronics even vary the TC from corner to corner. It is programmed differently for each different type and style of corner which allows the rider to just "point and shoot." It has been said that if you were to put Stoner on Hayden's bike he wouldn't have won a single race because of how much less electronic control is there. Hayden on the other hand started going faster when they took away some of the electronic control. I'm not trying to detract from either rider. They have learned with different styles and different things work. The electronic control is the wave of the future and will help riders to go faster. I wish that the electronic traction control that Ducati is releasing for the 1098R was available on all of their bikes. I would easily pay an extra $2K for it. It won't be long before it is appearing standard on 600 class sport bikes. I figure 5 years tops.
Anyway, my point is that Schumacher is a racing genius who knows how get around a track fast but he wouldn't be anywhere near the time that he was if he hadn't had coaching and hadn't been on the Ducati.
I think this all came about due to the fact that Rossi test drove an F1 car awhile back. It started a war of words between the two where Schumacher said that if they did a back to back race first in the car and then on the bike that his overall time would be a lot lower than Rossi's. I guess now we need to know if Rossi can put in a lap in an F1 car that is within 5 seconds of Schumacher. If he can come close then a "duel" might be in order.

| Re: Schumacher Rides Stoner's Ducati It was Alonso popping off about Rossi. Schumi was helping Rossi when he had a go in the Ferrari, it's not like Rossi could jump in that thing and do well without any coaching.
And Schumi's lap times would be a good 45+ seconds faster than Rossi's in the Ferrari F1.
So that statement would be right anyway.
Oh, and 5 seconds off the world's top MotoGP riders IS very much something to brag about. It is a VERY big deal. |

Oh, and 5 seconds off the world's top MotoGP riders IS very much something to brag about. It is a VERY big deal. | I didn't say it wasn't a big deal. I think it was. All I said is that it took some top level coaching to help get him there. He didn't try to make that a secret. It just seemed like some of the people up above were trying to say that he said, "oh that looks like fun," then walked over to the bike and ran a lap 5 seconds under the record. I was just trying to point out that he had help and that he also wouldn't be as close to the same time if it wasn't for electronics. I don't think he could get on a 500cc GP bike from 6 years ago and come within 5 seconds of Rossi's time on the same bike. I have always been a Schumacher fan and always will be. I did have garbled memory about who was popping off about who. I also know that Rossi would need some help driving an F1. Who wouldn't.

| Re: Schumacher Rides Stoner's Ducati The thing with F1 cars is that I think it would take a very long time to find the limits when it comes to the cornering speeds. I would imagine that the high corner speed and levels of grip it would take a lot of mental adjustment, the time to train your mind would be considerable. |
