Disalvo down...from ussuperbike

DiSalvo down
December 09, 2003

Chris Martin

Jason DiSalvo crashed his Yamaha R1 Superstock bike in Daytona's NASCAR Turn 4 on Tuesday afternoon. The high-speed tumble left the machine and rider separated by a considerable distance -- the bike came to a rest in the middle of the front straight, while DiSalvo couldn't even been seen from pit lane.

The youngster returned to the pits on the back of Miguel DuHamel's scooter , looking relatively unscathed, if a bit shaken up. Details are still sketchy but the crash appears to have been tire related.

The incident marked the end of Tuesday's activities. At the end of the day, Ben Bostrom was once again fastest, with a best time of 1:47.650. Underlining the CBR1000RR's potential, Miguel DuHamel (1:48.4) and Jake Zemke (1:48.8) were second and third quick on the day.

Next best were Mat Mladin, Jamie Hacking, and DiSalvo, lapping in the mid-1:49s.

The yammie (screw the tires...LOL)can't make it so a Honda scooter has to bring him in....

I'm glad Zemke is finally getting his shot and doing well. He deserves it.

It's feeling really good, and it doesn't matter in what area -- it holds a line really well, it comes of the corner really good, and the power is unbelievable."
I'd liked to say I'm suprised but I'm not. And in all seriousness, I doubt that BDA is all that suprised either. But then again, I've already read people giving reference to the 600RR and this year in AMA as a whole. The 600RR didn't win the AMA championship but it won some pretty significant titles (British and World championships if I remember right). IMHO, If I had wanted a 600RR and bought one at MSRP when it hit dealers, I wouldn't have buyers remorse in the least bit right now. Not because it won a championship, but because it really is a great bike.

But then again, I think everyone needs to sell whatever bike they own and go down to their local vultureship and put a deposit down on the new R1, hell sell your cage if you have to, you don't want to miss out on the experience

Re: CBR1000RR at Daytona Test

So far the best time is Ben w/ a 1:47.650. What will we see today? Are they even testing today?

My buddy was at the track yesterday and called me so I could hear the bikes go by. May the 1000 sounded wicked!!! But then again, they all sound cool when they are being wound out. Hearing those bikes really got my blood pumpin'. I can't wait until March!!!

Re: CBR1000RR at Daytona Test

Mladin is now saying that he will not race the Superbike at Daytona.
He's too scared. He's blaming it on the tire failure - the Superstock carcass tire failure, the one that is different from the Superbike tires. Sure, Dunlop has lost a few tires there, but the percentage isn't that big.
He's just warming up the excuse box.
Instead of watching the Hondas lap him at Daytona from the seat of his bike, he'll watch it from the pits like a little girl.

I remember reading a Dunlop rep saying the Superstock and Superbike tires for Daytona were the same compound and carcass construction. That's probably why they pulled the Superbike tires after yesterday's Superstock failure.

Re: CBR1000RR at Daytona Test

I'd like to see them stop racing at Daytona all together. Screw history; it's not safe and never has been. It's usually not even fun to watch other than it being the first race of the year.

Whats the matter Matt? You have the all supreme GSX-R, cant you ride with the big boys now that everyone has a 1,000cc or is it that Ben topped you by 10 miles per hour. Liar Liar its the tire! I guess he is not going to race at Road Atlanta either because he blew one there as well Suzuki should can him if he doesnt race.

Finally someone makes some sense! After spending some quality time in rehab from a turn 1 crash several years ago, I swore off "Stuper Speedways" as a substitute for a road course. A close friend and sometimes teammate (Rusty Bradley) bought it at Daytona the following year and I have never regretted my decision. It just flat out isn't a road racing venue. I would rather see the AMA open their season at Barber and skip the Daytona round altogether.

Re: CBR1000RR at Daytona Test

The track is hard on tires, but it sounds more like a Dunslop problem.

This was posted at roadracingworld.com:

FIRST PERSON/OPINION

Via e-mail:

In regard to the Dunlop tire failures I would like to add the comment that if people think that only the riders in the U.S. are having troubles, they should think again.

At the begining of the year in the British Superbike series, Dunlop were having so many problems that the entire paddock who were on Dunlops asked that the promoters reduce the amount of laps run in the second race of the day.

All the teams were concerned that the Dunlops could not last the full race distance. Of course, the Pirelli and Michelin teams were against the shortening of the race but were out-voted by the predominant teams on Dunlops. As reported by Motorcycle Racer magazine.

If I remember correctly "Shakey" Burne crashed twice on the same weekend when his Dunlop tires delaminated.

Stock bike my @ss. Other than the use of 16.5" wheels for Superbikes, I'd be willing to bet that at this stage the RR isn't that different. First time out for both bikes, neither have much development in them. After a few months of testing we'll start seeing the differences Honda can get out of the slightly different Superbike rules.
Hacking claims differently: link

After posting some Superbike-impressive times on the still-rough racer, he said, "First initial thoughts: the thing is unreal. To basically come right out of a crate like you can get in a dealership and do low-'49s on it, that's just unreal. When I did my fastest time it still had a stock pipe on it with a slip-on. The motor is completely stock -- the guys haven't had any time to even go into the things yet."
