Laconi recovery continues

Regis Laconi is now back home in France and continuing to recover from the injuries sustained at the Kyalami round of the 2009 World Superbike Championship.

Laconi was placed in an induced coma after falling in the opening minutes of free practice on Friday May 15, an accident that also left the DFX rider with two fractured vertebrae.

Brought out of his coma several days later, Laconi then had a metal plate inserted to stabilise the fractures. A fragment of bone that had lodged close to the spinal cord was also removed and plastic surgery carried out on the relevant area with a skin graft from the hip.

Since the operation, Laconi's condition has continued to improve and he was declared well enough to leave the French hospital, to which he had been transferred, and return home last Friday.

It will naturally take a considerable amount of time for the 2004 WSBK title runner-up to make a full recovery, but the DFX team confirmed that Laconi is speaking normally, regaining his long-term memory with each day and joking with friends.

Laconi, who hopes to start cycling and swimming soon, has already stated that he intends to return to the track. While he recovers, Laconi's place at DFX has been taken by Lorenzo Lanzi.

Excellent news. All the best for a speedy recovery Regis.

Great to hear.
While its great to think he could race again, I think most would be just happy to walk and have a normal life.

Yes, you would think so but that just goes to show what a racers mind is like. They just never give up!
