| Re: Why do they run such tall rear tires? Most of the slicks in the past were run on 16.5 rims, looks like these are 17s. I think they like a higher profile on the slicks for more gushiness in turns
LTL can prolly provide a more accurate depiction--but hes in Europe for the next 2 weeks |

because they can . . .
Actually 195/70 is pretty close to the same overall height as 190/60 (aspect ratios of 2.97 vs 3.17), but a hell of a lot more wall height (the flat area between the rim and the contact section). I would imagine this is for heat transfer and high speed stability, but this would only be an educated guess. |

| Re: Why do they run such tall rear tires? You are both right. Taller sidewalls give an artificial suspension effect (gushiness? LOL) more air inside the tire as well. |

Definately more air volume. This means the tire can absorb little bumps in corners better aiding traction. They definately feel "marshmellowy". A bit of delay on corner entry, and easier to slide.
More air volume is good as you get less pressure effects...but in bikes this isn't a real problem...otherwise racers would do like car guys and use nitrogen.
I felt it had more contact patch (more traction, a bit slower to turn), you seem to be able to throttle it up earlier, although an early drive has never been my strong suit.
I have been told it aids in "spring" off the corner by riders better than me, but I never felt this effect.
Dunlop also offers many of the "trick" compounds only in 16.5", this is a very good reason to use the size.
Typed this after plenty of good "vin rogue", YMMV... |

Looking at that tire, you can see quite a few radial "ribs" on the sidewall....far more than the normal flash lines from the mold segments.
Is this intentional.....to maybe break up the boundary layer of air on the sidewall and dissipate more heat?
