| Re: anyone ever shortened an exhaust? the main reason we use short pipes is for wheelies. The srock and aftermarket pipes are too long. Your pipe hits before you tail when scraping. The best way to cut one down is with a metal chop saw. iys a nice square cut. You can also usw a sawzall. I had a carbon fiber I cut down and it wasnt much louder. I love shortys. Cleaner look. |

| Shortening an exhaust / race can Ok so i shortened my pipe today! .... and here's how i did it....
This is what it looked like before the chop... http://i603.photobucket.com/albums/t...8032009340.jpg http://i603.photobucket.com/albums/t...ladewremus.jpg
First of all obviously i drilled the rivets to get the exit spout off... http://i603.photobucket.com/albums/t.../Photo0003.jpg
after drilling the rivets and removing the strap i found that it wasnt quite as simple as pulling it out, as the remus revolution can is in a sort of 'diamond' type shape, its not oval, which meant it was wedged in like a pencil in vanessa phelts bum crack!! on an oval you probably can just pull it out, but i had to chop the can an inch down to get it off... then remove the surplus once it was off the can... http://i603.photobucket.com/albums/t.../Photo0004.jpg http://i603.photobucket.com/albums/t.../Photo0005.jpg http://i603.photobucket.com/albums/t.../Photo0012.jpg http://i603.photobucket.com/albums/t.../Photo0013.jpg
next thing was to take off the badge, couple of rivets... i thought, easy, drilled them out, and its stuck on with super industrial strength double sided!! which is fine, but the badge itself is made of a wafer thin alloy, so i had to bend it to get it off... i used a very thin screwdriver to help me along my way.. but got it off in the end... http://i603.photobucket.com/albums/t.../Photo0014.jpg http://i603.photobucket.com/albums/t.../Photo0015.jpg
once that was off i then measured where i wanted the can to be cut to, and marked it by wrapping tape around the can, then i cut it with a hacksaw, but didnt chop straight through, i went around the can so that i would be chopping the internals seperately... i took 6 inches off mine... http://i603.photobucket.com/albums/t.../Photo0016.jpg
I should really point out that i did this whole job with hand tools in my bedroom, so no big machinery is actually needed...
once cut you can see you have the centre baffle which is wrapped with wirewool and the wadding surrounding that... http://i603.photobucket.com/albums/t.../Photo0009.jpg http://i603.photobucket.com/albums/t.../Photo0010.jpg http://i603.photobucket.com/albums/t.../Photo0011.jpg http://i603.photobucket.com/albums/t.../Photo0017.jpg http://i603.photobucket.com/albums/t.../Photo0018.jpg
once i had cut the outside of the can to my desired length i then simply just hacked through the centre baffle (you can do this whilst the wire wool is still on) so that it was the same length as the outside of the can. http://i603.photobucket.com/albums/t.../Photo0019.jpg http://i603.photobucket.com/albums/t.../Photo0020.jpg
Then with the wadding i just marked where it needed to be and simply hack sawed through that aswell... and you end up wit this! http://i603.photobucket.com/albums/t.../Photo0021.jpg
as far as putting it back together goes its just a reverse of the way you took it apart, but to make things easier, i used a permanent pen to mark where the rivet holes were on the exit spout for ease of drilling once i got the spout back in... http://i603.photobucket.com/albums/t.../Photo0022.jpg
after about an hour of swearing and shouting, i got the exit spout back in the can... (it really isnt easy with a can this shape!) i literally had my entire weight balancing on it and it wouldnt go in, once i had warped the shape of the can with my hands and pushed the spout in with my head (not recomended) i then just used a soft peice of wood and a hammer to tap it in. Also when i put the badge back on i used the old hole that was originally for the right side of the badge, for the left side, when putting it back on, that way you only need to drill one more hole for the right side rivet of the badge...
Then its a case of drilling and riveting it back up.. and you have a shorty can!!! im well chuffed with the finished product... http://i603.photobucket.com/albums/t.../Photo0023.jpg http://i603.photobucket.com/albums/t.../Photo0025.jpg http://i603.photobucket.com/albums/t.../Photo0026.jpg
as you can see from this i have angled the exit spout slightly just as i wanted it to be a bit different and have an angled look (probably why it was so hard to get it in!!) but once on it sounds very nice and i think compliments the looks of the bike
