| The Money Pit - aka 900rr OK i have a 93 900rr, and after it was hit twice last year, i started having some major problems so i parked it for about 8 months I started striping the bike down, dropped the motor out, replaced my valve seals and found out that the cylinders had a tiny bit of rust in them from sitting too long. Saved up for pistons, and after a 3 week wait from Honda - the suckers showed up this morning at work and i shipped them and the cylinders off to APE to be bored out. So i have the next 3-4 weeks to get my bike ready for when i get my cylinders back and start rebuilding the motor again....
so enjoy the pics, and watch the fighter come out to play |

Why not put aftermarket pistons in?

I would think aftermarket pistons would be made to a higher standard than mass-produced Honda ones though.
I was thinking maybe you were running pistons from a different engine.

| Re: The Money Pit - aka 900rr nope, i like honda. it was also several hundred bucks cheaper to go honda.
ill prolly never run a wiseco in my bike. aside from being way over priced, i see too many bikes come in with cracked/broken wiseco pistons. And i only wanna do this once. a full engine tear down is too much a pain in the ass JUST to replace pistons. i understand why they designed the engine the way it is - but i still dont like it.. |

There are a _lot_ of aftermarket piston manufacturers though.
I agree about only doing the job once which is why I would go for a good forged high-compression piston if it were my bike. I'm not big on tearing a motor down just to put it back together at standard spec :-)

| Re: The Money Pit - aka 900rr well its a 1mm over, and with the 889 engine, should be enough to make a tiny difference. add in a high comp head gasket, mod'ed air box, stage 3 jet kit, custom exhaust (undertail) and this baby will be flying!! She only pulled 86HP on our dyno before blowing out a lot of smoke at high RPM. so im hoping for at least 110-115hp when im done with her |

The 919 is just an 893 bored 1mm after all :-)
Have you considered putting 1000RR injection on it?
Higher compression produces a lot more heat than power but should be good for 1-2%.
The undertail exhaust might cost you some topend but the extra length should be good for midrange.
86hp is _really_ bad, do you know what caused it?
I would think 115hp should be easy as you should be able to get more than the stock 919 put out when they were new.
Can't wait to find out :-)

do tell!!!
as far as the bad HP, we think its a combo of bad rings and bad valve seals |

You would have to fit the full 1000RR harness, ECU, instrument cluster and the engine sensors but I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard to get it working. Apart from the obvious horsepower potential, the biggest advantage to my mind on a seriously modified engine is the ease of tuning with a PC instead of having to mess with jets and needles.
Are you considering cams and/or flatslides as they would both be good bang for buck.
Are you porting the head while it's off?

oh no...now im going to be thinking about this today to see it its doable $$ wise...
no cams....dident think of flatslides but ill have to check into that now - cn ya point me in the right direction??
Maybe on porting the head...its still up in the air... |

Maybe on porting the head...its still up in the air... | I don't know what the general concensus is but I'd probably go with cams before the carbs. It's a bit more work putting cams in compared to just swapping the carbs and I'd expect more return from the cams with stock carbs than from flatslides with stock cams. The carbs are probably considerably more expensive as well. Not usre what you mean about direction. Something like these would be nice :-) KEIHIN FCR 39mm FLATSLIDES 4-CBR900RR (93-99):eBay Motors (item 300323560936 end time Jun-27-09 19:56:04 PDT)

To gain peak power you basically take it from the midrange.
It's like the difference between the 100hp Bandit 1200 and the 135hp GSXR1100 - same engine but totally different power characteristics.
