| '96 900RR - a good platform I recently sold my '96 Yamaha FZR600 (my first fighter build) and got a '96 CBR900RR for just $1000. I guess it used to be a stunt bike (seeing that it has a 14 tooth front sprocket and a 50 rear!). It needs some TLC and I have plenty of plans on turning it into a worthy fighter. I already ordered an Acewell speedo, a set of factory sprockets and a set of bar end mirrors to start. Hopefully I'll be updating this build thread frequently- |

| Re: '96 900RR - a good platform Ok, so I've run into some issues. I rode my bike for about two hours without a problem last week and the next day I went to ride it and it wouldn't start. It seemed as though the battery had taken a dump. When I scanned over the bike I noticed a plug under the seat had been unplugged. It was the plug coming from the stator cover. I plugged it back in, push-started the bike and it fired up.......then smoke started coming from under my seat! I quickly shut off the bike, unplugged the wire I had just plugged in, and took off the seat. I'm pretty sure that my voltage regulator is toast. Now, I'm not all that good when it comes to electrical issues so here's where I need the help. I'm not sure if my stator is bad, or if the vr was bad to begin with. Any help on how to diagnose this issue before I spend money on another vr and fry that one too? Thanks in advance- |

| Re: '96 900RR - a good platform they all do that!
regulator rectifier...
common problem
you can get aftermarket ones with extra cooling fins
remember it needs to be mounted on the mounting point on the frame or on a replacement plate..the plate acts as a heat sink...
looking at the pics, yours was floating around...not good!

| Re: '96 900RR - a good platform Well, after several weeks of not being able to ride my new 900, I'm finally starting to get the parts I need. Got my regulator/rectifier and some bar-end mirrors. I should be getting a battery any day now. With all the accidents I've been hearing about lately though, maybe it's not a bad thing that I haven't been riding. In our local news last night, a guy was killed while riding his quad.....he didn't have a helmet on though. |

Those are the lights that were on the bike when I bought it. I plan on getting a different headlight setup at some point. Just don't have the extra cash right now (of course) . I've played around with the idea of moving them lower, but just haven't yet. I wanted to get out and RIDE!!! |
