| Slick's XR650 Press Release Just finalized everything on this. I actually haven't even seen it yet but it is sitting in my friends garage now about 8 hours away from me. He picked it up for me a few hours ago, unfortunately it will probably be almost a month before we get it transferred to my garage. Quote:
Team Honda's 2003 Honda XR650R N2 bike. This bike was ridden by Johnny Campbell...if you know anything about XR650s he's arguably the best Honda Endurance Rider of all time.
I bought this bike from RPM in May and because it was Team Honda's and had never been sold to the public, it has a full 6 month warranty on the motor. This warranty is good through the end of July. I just got a offer from Honda Motor Corp to extend the warranty for 4 years for an add $400 (also a 1, 2, and 3 year option) that's a fully warrantied race ready bike!
About the bike:
This was their back up bike, N2. They used it to race (and win 1st place) at The Best of the Desert in Vegas. The bike has all of the best parts that money can buy: A full hand welded titanium pro circuit pipe (it's sounds awesome), titanium rear spring, Suspension done by Bobby Bell, titanium rear shock spring, brakes done by Braking: with a Wave front rotor, BRB triple clamp, mount for Scotts Steering stabilizer, huge alum radiators, custom computer drilled air cover, aftermarket ignition box to give it more spark/power enough to run the big desert lights, high compression piston, Honda jet kit (all done by team Honda) and I’m sure a few more things.
| Should be an awesome starting point for a SuMo. Supposed to have monster power. |

no electric start though?
I made a similar choice in June... street legal XR400...
it once took me over 50 tries to kick start it

it once took me over 50 tries to kick start it | I hope it never takes me that long. It has the high compression piston so it will be a monster to start if not done right. My friend says it starts first kick every time for him and until he picked it up for me yesterday he'd never kickstarted a bike in his life.
Phone conversation with my friend while he was picking it up for me:
Him: You're planning to ride this thing on the street?
Me: Uh, yeah...that's the plan.
Him: You are going to get in SOOOO much trouble.
Me: Yep. Quote:

| I like U-Mo. I might go with that. |

Plans: Full dual-sport wiring harness. 17in sumo rims and tires (probably the Continental Contiforce SM, they seem to have the best all around reviews for on road and light off road). I'm not going to touch power, gearing, suspension, or anything like that for now. It has full worked over suspension done by Bobby Bell. A 320mm rotor with caliper relocater at some point but it does already have an upgraded Braking set-up with wave rotor that will be sufficient for now. Eventually I'd like to go to all black and white plastics but that will about the very last thing done.
Total Budget: Umm, yeah...the F4i is for sale. Partly to help pay for this project but the leftover will be added to the 848 fund. The final plan is the U-Mo for running around and the 848 for everything you use an 848 for. I just decided that I can't live with only an 848. It just doesn't do it as a daily commuter and the F4i is too much like the 848 to want to have it and an F4i.
Cross Training: Not really, other than for the dirt and gravel roads that are all over Iowa that I won't ride the F4i on. I'd like to sell off the dirt rims and tires to help finance the other stuff but don't really want to split up a bike like this so I haven't decided. |

Did I miss a thread? You picked up an 848?
If you would have said something earlier (like last month) or you lived closer I'd take that f4i off your hands.

-jh | No, sorry, I wasn't clear. The money from the F4i will go into the 848 fund. The 848 probably won't come for a little while since I decided to do the sumo first. After my 848 test ride I realized that I'll need an everyday commuter so decided to start working on a sumo to fill that need. |

There is a lot more info on the F3 rim conversion at supermotojunkie. |

Oh and I have an F3 rim that I will be selling shortly. I took it off my 900 before I sold that.

| Re: Slick's XR650 Press Release Okay, finally got it here last week. The thing is an absolute beast. The crappy camera mic just doesn't do the noise justice but it's still pretty impressive. In person this thing sounds AMAZING. The neighbors are going to absolutely hate me.
I emailed Bob Bell from Precision Concepts who built the bike for American Honda and he gave me some history about the bike and some interesting info. Quote: Hi Will If the bike you have has the number N2 with white numbers on blue backgrounds [it does], that would be a best in the desert race bike. That bike has .45 fork springs, with valving set up for high speed like nevada desert or baja. It has several special parts in the forks, and the springs are unique as well. If the shock has a high speed clicker[it does], then it is a special one that was a race team unit[sweet]. If the spring is red[it is], it is a 9.7 kg. rate and the valving is set up to match the forks. again, this is a special shock, with several custom parts[very sweet]. Everything on the suspension we have rebuild parts for. If this was a nevada race bike[have confirmed that it was], then the motor will have a power up kit in it. This consists of a cam, high compression piston, special cam chain and sprockets, jetting, and gaskets. This kit is from Honda so if you need any replacement parts, we can get them, or any honda dealer should be able to help you. One way to confirm if this kit is in the bike is to check the main jet. we ran a 185 or 188 in the power up kit motors, and a 175 or 178 in the motors that had stock pistons. In baja we ran stock pistons in the bikes, but still used the rest of the other power up parts. The rest of the motor is stock. Hopefully this helps answer your questions. If you have any more, feel free to E-- mail or call us Thanks, Bob | and another one Quote: Hi Will, Yes you do have a shock with a high speed adjuster. The 17mm red hex is the high speed adjuster. The slot head in the center is the low speed adjuster. The low speed has clicks, and the high speed is just turns. Here are the standard settings for the fork and shock: shock----- compression low speed : 8 clicks out compression high speed : 7/ 8 ths of a turn out rebound : 12 clicks out fork----- compression : 10 clicks out rebound : 13 clicks out all adjustments are starting all the way stiff ( in ) then turning out to the proper setting. the spring is a custom built item from KYB japan. most of our jetting was done at about 3000 feet. these bikes were run down to sea level at times so the jetting may be okay. if you do not race on high speed roads or are not on the rev limit alot, you will probably be fine. we did run race gas in the bikes with the power up pistons, but how you ride will determine if you need this or not. the hotter and harder you ride the bike, the more this makes a difference. thanks Bob | |

I only weigh 145# and haven't had any problems starting it. It's more work than a 250 2-stroke but with the decompression lever it isn't a big deal. Spin it around a few times to get some oil pumped around. Set-it just past top dead center and give a good one. Usually goes on two when cold and one when warm. |

I'm lazy, I'm looking to get one already done, hehe, one of these days, loot is an issue for me too... I sold my CR5, I now regret selling it, as it would have been the sickest SuMo known to man, other then your 650, hehe. |

| Re: Slick's XR650 Press Release Unfortunately yes. I wanted to get a feel for how it runs before I start throwing money at the project so I got it plated and insured so that I could take it out on the road. It is definitely fast and built for high speed running. With the stage 2 cam and HRC kit the power band is up a little higher which seems to really work well on the street. It's no sport bike but still not lacking power. |

| Re: Slick's XR650 Press Release First ride was AWESOME. This thing is going to be fun. Without even trying it will power wheelie in the first three gears. The roads are a disaster right now with salt and sand everywhere and I still don't have a working headlight so I was fairly conservative today. Didn't get to test out it's cornering prowess but it seems like it will be great.
All the wiring was done with quick disconnects so it can go track ready in very short time. I wired the existing XR taillight to come on with the brakelight. The Baja Designs LED taillight looks great
First pics.
Don't hate, the zip tie holding the license plate is temporary. |
