Reputation Power: 6 | new gsxr1000 - impressive!
I dropped in to a Suzuki dealer and had a look at the new GSXR1000K5 - very impressive! pic here another pic here
It has got to be the smallest open class I4 to date. Tiny! The 954 is small - but this looks smaller and slimmer and looks to have an even lower seat height. And the 2004 GSXR1000K4s in the same Suzuki shop looked WAY bigger and bulkier than the new bike. It's 166kg dry - 2 less than a 954 and 13kg less than a CBR1000RR.
I didn't like the new triangular exhaust in pics but in real life it looks quite good and is quite compact as stock mufflers go - MUCH smaller and better looking than the stock 954 muffler.
I liked the indicators in the mirrors and the integral rear indicators in the rear cowl. Very classy.
It has a steering damper fitted standard and this seems to be quite conservatively damped - couldn't feel anything turning the bars from side to side at a standstill. As it's not variable damping like the CBR1000RR I wonder if it actually does anything or is just a fashion accessory? I didn't see any adjustment on it but maybe there is and it's set to minimum as stock.
At any rate - very nice bike and the first Suzook I'd consider getting over a Honda.
Every year the bikes get better. What's next? A 2009 1000 the size of a 250 with 220hp and 150kg?! Where will it end?

Very curious to see what honda will do with the '06 1000rr. If the 05 600rr is any indication, a substantial drop in weight and slight increase in performance is in order. Though I think the 1000rr will have a greater performance increase than the 600rr did, mainly because the engine has great tuning potential. Lumpier cams for a bit higher redline, revised intake and exhaust, and half a point more compression could net another 10 whp maybe.
This new Suzuki has some impressive stats but to me doesn't seem as sophisticated as the Honda. Also, I think it's hideous but that is a matter of preference.

that's the first pic I've seen of it.... I thought it was hideous! lol
we all have different taste, and looks shouldn't matter i guess.... but DAMN, it says "titanium" on the pipe..... rofl
oooooohh titanium, gotta have it now! It looks like it's primered and not painted.
I like the tail of the bike though, the integrated signals are indeed cool. that's about it

I hate suzuki! but after the 1000rr came out i've been looking at other makes.... the 1000rr is a joke all it is is an underpowered reshaped busa low, long, and over weight!
the zx10 looks good, is fun to ride, but has too many issues to be worth me buying.... for a rider of 250lbs the r1 just has no grunt (above 10k don't count in town) now the new gsxr....... well...... it's small... about the size of an r6! but.... it's a suzuki i want to get 10k miles on it before i need a new motor!

Suzuki kept the new Gixxer pretty minimal. The new exhaust can is the shape it is for a reason. Bone stock the new GSXR is probably the liter bike to beat. I am not a huge Suzuki fan but I can appreciate the effort that went into building the bike. And at the track the new GSXR will most likely be outclassing all other bikes. Sure the 1000RR looks good at a bike night but for pure performance it is a bit lacking.

Holy crap, why didn't I realize that before. The dyno's all show it to be a half a hp down from the other 3 bikes, and jesus, it's so slow, I mean it was 1/10 of a second off the lap time of a 10R at willow. And lets not get into those 1/4 mile numbers, I mean hell, one of the other 3 actually beat it. Damn why didn't you talk to me before I wasted this 10 grand.
Damn magazine racer. Good job on that one lmao.

I would like to sneak a 5lb weight underneath the plastics of one of the new ultra lightweight motorcycles and see if the magazine reviewers say something like 'you could definitley feel the extra weight of the xxxxxx'. Everybody makes a HUGE deal about a bike being 1-2lbs heavier, or cutting 1-2 pounds here or there. Do you think if they didn't know and put it on a scale first that they would even notice? [/endrant]

HAHA that lardass Mitch Boehm wouldn't feel a 5 pound reduction. He probably eats 6 pounds of chili cheese dogs and takes 4 pound shits.

Reminds me of the people who say they got bike x over bike y because of the ~5hp difference or ~5pounds difference when the bike will never be used in a competition.

Exactly.
And don't most reviewers say it's the best for street riding out of the four contenders?

For what I use mine for, the blade is the best I can get sans a busa or 12 and they just don't cut it for me. I like the nimbleness in the backroads of a 1000 but the others are even harder to control the front end on. The Honda swingarm although designed to road race does a hell of a job on the drag strip where I do all of my track time at. It is the easiest of the 4 to keep down stock and with the simple suspension mods I have done, it only gets better.
I will take my 10 lb heavier bike and use every bit of the power over a front light bike and not being able to whack it wide open in first.

I am sure I would be impressed but after reading about the GSXR 1K I think
I would be even more impressed with it. I got to check out both at the Long
Beach bike show. And for fit and finish Honda wins hands down. But on the track fit and finish just makes you look good.

I caged it down there too. When I saw it at LB, I looked at the tail section and thought - THE KATANA CREATORS STRIKE!
What did you think about the "Can-O-Tuna mated with an Aprilia" rear??
Didn't it look like it had a "shrunken head" windscreen from the front??

I drove a friends brand new 05 GSXR750 over the weekend, it only had 200 miles on it. The vibrations drove me crazy around 60 - 80 mph, my back and wrists hurt after 50 miles. If thats any indication to how the GSXR1000 will handle then
I still love my 954, although the zx10 has me checking her out.

Actually the 954 is not the smoothest 4 I've owned. It's a bit buzzy through the bars for a Honda don't you think?

I'm not sure about other Honda's because mine is the only Honda I have ever driven but the vibrations are very minimal on my 954. I expect some vibration but the GSXR750's was unexceptable.
On the flip side to be fair I have a tendancy to hear and feel any little thing wrong with my bike and fix it. If I hear and odd noise or vibration I tear the bike down seeking out the problem otherwise I go crazy.

Perhaps "buzzy" was the wrong word to describe the 954. Nothing buzzes or rattles. It's more what I feel through my hands - and that is (at some speeds and revs) - a high frequency vibration that has an unpleasant hand numbing effect exacerbated by the pressure the 954 (and any sportbike) places on the wrists. |
