| SV650 question... Why do the carbed sv's have a fuel pump? Is the back of the tank lower than the carbs or something? |

All models ('99-02) are equipped with a diaphragm-type fuel pump mounted on the right side of the frame. Pressure pulses from the crankcase operate the fuel pump. Fuel from the fuel tank is routed to the fuel pump, which directs fuel to the carburetors. A relief valve inside the pump stops output flow when the fuel level in the float bowl forces the fuel valve to close.
| Now, I've got a couple for someone with race or track prep experience...
I just re jetted my SV and I'm putting a full Yosh system on. I'm pretty damned pleased with myself so far, but then I haven't fired it up yet.
1. What kind of high temp gasket stuff should I use to install the exhaust? Do I just slather it on the joints?
2. I removed the breather box that was between the crankcase breather tubes and the air box... so what do you do with the breathers? I figure if I plug them something bad will result, Do I just vent them to the air? Would they present a possible oil leak problem?
3. Where do I get a BMC race filter? I desnorkeled a stock one, but Ivan Performance says to get a BMC. |

Looking at pictures, I'm more convinced the bottom of the fuel tank is below the rear cylinder carb, hence the necesity of a fuel pump. As for your other questions, the orange hi temp silicone should work fine, I use it on all my 2 stroke pipes. The crankcase breathers need some sort of filter on them to keep stuff out of the motor, K&N makes tiny ones, about as big around as a quarter or so, try one of those. There shouldnt be much coming out of them unless your rings are shot and you have alot of blowby. |

Interestingly, you may want to use a real catch can with a filter output for the breather line(s). I found a couple of HP on the RC from unrestricting the crankcase vent and stopped the problem of fuel vapor in the crankcase or oil in the airbox with the stock system. Using a tiny breather can pressurize the crankcase and cavitate the oil (even more than the crank slugs).

I owned a heavily modded (big surprise, no?) '01 SV. 1) You won't need any sealer on any of the joints of your full Yoshi system. I had a full stainless TRS system on mine - it's totally unnecessary. 2) I'm unfamiliar with the "breather box" you're talking about. Is that an evap can? Is your bike a CA spec model? 3) My SV dyno'd better with a slightly more restrictive K&N than the BMC and tank spacing mod you might have read about. I'd get the K&N, but if you must have a BMC, I think Dennis Kirk and AF1 Racing both carry them.
A question: did you do Catpoopman's jetting on your bike or did you buy a quality, engineered jet kit? |

Thanks for the heads up on the high temp goop, Chain.
The "breather box", according to the manual, is the sort of trapezoidal appendage to the left and below the air box, into which the two crankcase tubes vent. Then the oil and schmutz goes right into the bottom of the air box.
Abtech - Do I make this catch can or is there one I can buy? What do I use for a filter material??
I bought the Ivan's Performance Race jet and needle kit.. with the same Yosh system I have and the aforementioned BMC it's supposed to raise HP and torque by about 10%. Ivan says the K&N has to be modified ( desnorkeled ) which I thought was a pain in the ass when I did it to the stock filter, but the BMC is ready to rock.
I'll try those sources you mentioned ( actually, I'll check our sponsors first. ) Thanks! |

Thanks - That's a beautiful piece.
I'll put away the beer can and the cotton balls now...

Think PCV vent. |
