SV Race tires.

I just wanted a set of Pirelli SuperCorsa Pro tires in the SC2-green soft compound, but not SC1-blue "qualifying" in 120/70 and 160/60. After screwing around on line looking for pricing, I find they're no longer making the SC2 front, so they're all the SC1-"q" type. Anybody using these? Do they tear up quickly?

Also, and feel free to talk me out of this, please.... They have a 150/60 rear for about $100 cheaper than the 160/60. What's the downside from a race-trackday point of view? I know a racer who uses those sometimes on his SV and he's really fast. On the other hand, as a guy on the SVRider site pointed out, tires are cheaper than highsides. Zoran likes 'em, though. WTF?

It looks like the only other DOT race tires made in SV size are Michelin Power Race, and they come in a lot of different compounds and flavors. They also cost an arm and a leg, though if I renew my CCS license that I didn't ask for, there are discounts to be had.

I see a Dunlop 208GPA, but that seems to be available only as a 150/60 rear.

eeeeek, shrub, or somebody set me straight here, please.

Re: SV Race tires.

Back when I was racing the Hawk, some of the Hawk and SV guys would run the 150's. Sort of the 190 vs. 180 debate with the Fireblades and RC51's. You would likely get a little lighter handling at the possible expense of ultimate traction .... but you are on a little twin, with fairly smooth power delivery.

Re: SV Race tires.

When I used pirellis I always used the supersoft front and soft rear. (SC1/SC2)

Re: SV Race tires.

I used nothing but Pilot Race on my SV. S2 front/H2 or M2 rear. No complaints here. I got them for right around $300-315/set at the track.

RRW - What can you tell me about the wear characteristics of the SC1? My experience w/the SV is that it's pretty easy on tires overall.

Seemed to wear just fine on my F3 and F4 (I always replaced front and rear as a set). I never had an issues with the front going off before my rear. Even in the hot (90s-100s) we were running the SC1 front. That was the most popular run combo out here at the southern Cali tracks. I haven't used the Pirellis since they went to the Pros....

You mentioned a SC1q....is that something new or you just calling it a q due to the supersoft designation?

Re: SV Race tires.

Just me.. they used to designate it as a qualifier that would only be effective for a few laps.. hence my skepticism. I notice that Roadracing World used that specific combination on all the 600s in the comparo this month.

I'll try it!

Now I just have to make a decision about the 150 vs 160...
