Problems Shifting Gears on gsxr 1100

I own a 1994 Suzuki gsx-r 1100 with 11000 miles, but it is only shifting into 1st gear, it does not shift into 2nd and up. When i try to shift into second the bike either jumps out of second into nuetral or just stays in nuetral. It is almost like something is locked up. Do you think this could be a transmission problem or a clutch problem?

The clutch does work... I talked to a motorcycle repair shop today, and they wanted anywhere from $ 1500- $2000 to put a new transmission. Is this a job i can do myself or would it a be wise to take it to a mechanic?

Depends on how mechanically skilled you are. You'll definitely need a service manual. www.helminc.com

I just had a problem with my 929 being hard to shift. I am pretty mechanically inclined, but only have a $100 craftsman tool set.

Keeping the engine in the frame, I took off the crankcase cover and oil pan and was able to disassemble everything but the main and countershafts. i inspected everything and it was all fine. turns out my shift lever was seized!

point is, dont waste $1500-2000 letting someone repair that. i suggest getting the manual, then inspecting everything like i did. I maybe had 10 hours into tear down, inspection, and install. next time it would take 5hours. anyway, do it yourself, worst case you need new gears, main,or countershaft. for my bike it was $200 used for all tranny parts on ebay. or worst case, you could just buy a used engine for $1000 or less.

Re: Problems Shifting Gears on gsxr 1100

Thanks for the advice.. I started working on my bike this weekend, and i think i figured out what the problem was. The comp cam. was grinded down in a certain spot. The part is about 106.00 with shipping, but i havent cheked on eBay yet. I took pictures and labeled all the parts, so hopefully everything will go back together nicely.

not as bad as you'd think, huh? and you get the understanding of how the entire transmission works. so your shift cam was bad? you know that one of the teeth on that cam is purposely carved out, thats the neutral position.

yeah, im sure you'll find the problem. id think a problem would be obvious, and not necessarily hard to find. once you know you found the bad part, just search on ebay for a week, or look on the various sportbike websites classifieds section, and look for people parting bikes out and make a deal!

good luck.
