use a snap on (blue point) angled self locking filter wrench part no. ya997, this will enable removal of filter there is enough room to tighten filter by hand as the wrench unable to tighten

Here's a link to the wrench -- it looks a heck of a lot better than the channel locks I used to remove and install my last filter.

Here's the same tool for less than Snap-On prices. Harbor Freight Tools - Quality Tools at the Lowest Prices doesn't look like it locks though.

I have to admit taking the plastic off is a pain in the a**. I made a piece of plastic to go under the filter to keep the oil from running all over the exhaust and lower farings. I won't be taking the plastic off again.

I use a small strap wrench to remove and tighten the filter.

Newspaper makes a good funnel to channel the oil away from the bike when removing the filter. I wedge it under the filter then loosen it about a turn or so to let it drain away from the bodywork and into a drain pan.
