Re: Freightliner Sprinter vans

I've been seeing these around town being used by coffee vendors and such...

Am I the only one that thinks they'd make a great racing hauler? Looks like enough room to easily carry two bikes and a bunch of spares in a fairly secure manner. Throw in a pop-up or something and you could sleep in the thing. You can even stand up straight in them if you ain't too tall.

Slick.

Dan

Re: Freightliner Sprinter vans

If I had money falling out of my pockets, I'd have a dedicated box van. The only thing I've seen is some have some pretty high deck heights, but other than that, it would kick ass.

FedEx uses those things around here, they are really neat looking things. And they have a Mercedes Turbo Diesel motor

Re: Freightliner Sprinter vans

The Sprinter vans are available through Dodge dealerships (Freightliner is part of the DaimlerChrysler conglomerate) but are a bit pricey.
The extra roof height would be nice, but not necessary.

Our 'team' (me and three buddies) ran a box van for a while and while it was huge and could carry multiple bikes and lots of stuff, that was one of it's pitfalls. Here's a partial list of why we sold ours:
Gas mileage
Seats only two, yet can carry five bikes and all the stuff.
Because of #2, if you have a group larger than two, you need a second vehicle anyway.
Because of #2 everyone and their dog asks you to take their bike or their crap with you.
Speed limitations
Wind issues

Anyway, now I have a regular old long van and while the roof is low, I can carry two people, two bikes and two people's crap.
Or I can carry my bike and stuff and take a nap next to it.
Those Sprinters are pretty cool, but the extra height will bring in to play some of the wind issues again.

Re: Freightliner Sprinter vans

No wonder the name sounded familiar. Those things have been around for years in Europe (you know, narrow streets 'n all). As a matter of fact, I rented one when I moved all my crap to be airlifted from the airport in Munich back in March 2000.

Roomy, and yes, a big sail, especially if the load is light.
