4x8 trailer for 2 bikes?

I bought an older homemade 4x8 trailer from my gf's grandparents for $50. I need to make this hold 2 bikes, mainly for a Dragon trip we are taking in May but also for the track this year. Think it will hold? I am putting 12" wheels on it, not sure if I should go with 4.80 or 5.30. Its rated at like 1000lbs. I would be cruising interstate at about 70mph. Similar today what would be sold at Harbor Freight. I would get chocks and good tie down points, etc. Its snowy and cold so I dont want to mess with it yet. Really my question is do you think I need a bigger trailer (that holds more weight and is wider)? If so Ill put this on craigslist and save for a heavier duty one.

If its rated at 1000lbs, you should be fine with 2 bikes. Maybe weld some iron supports underneath.....maybe some commin up on the sides also, to tie the bike down to, instead of that wood.

Re: 4x8 trailer for 2 bikes?

I just built a 4'X8' this winter for the same reason. Two bikes fit fine. I used this trailer..... Tractor Supply Company - Carry-On 4 ft. x 8 ft. Trailer, 1500 lbs. GVWR
Go with the 5.30X12 tires, treated 2x12 or 10 or 8 floor and use some stout 1/2" eye bolts for tie down points and you're in buisness.

Re: 4x8 trailer for 2 bikes?

Well I got rid of the 4x8 and got this 7x10 trailer. Its nice and big for many uses. It was pretty rusted so I removed a lot and sprayed it black and laid 2x6x10 treated wood for the floor. It used to be a snowmobile tilt trailer. I need to check the wheel bearings and she'll be good to go. The tires on there are 5.30x12 load B. Those should be fine for two bikes +/- 70mph right? I would think so but I know the load C would be the best. I was also thinking of going to the junkyard and finding some 13" wheels off a old Honda or something that had decent tires. hmmm
