| bwhip's adventure week set to begin... I'm slightly geeked about my upcoming dream week. Friday I haul the 'Blade down to Pahrump, Nevada for two awesome days of STAR school with my son and Jason Pridmore. That Pahrump track looks absolutely awesome. I found some video of a CBR600 speeding around it here.
Monday I load up the bike and head east to Moab, Utah, for four days of mountain biking in the absolute MTB MECCA.
Might even squeeze in a couple of rounds of golf along the way...
Weather looks promising.
This could be fun... |

| Re: bwhip's adventure week set to begin... You'll be hangin' your butt (and your torso) way off the bike by the time you get done with STAR, I'll bet, and you'll be lookin' an' ridin' mighty sharp doin' it too, bwhip.
Otherwise, you'd have to try to get your money back, due to ineffectual training.
Hope you have a real blast with the bike on the track, and the bike in the dirt. You'll probably need a golf game or two in between to rest and recuperate, though. Good thing you have this tentatively penciled in. |

| Re: bwhip's adventure week set to begin... If it is your first time out to Moab, don't get too ambitious on the famous Slickrock Trail. Do the 'practice' loop a couple times before heading out to the main loop. Once there, you can go either direction, but taking it clockwise is slightly easier than counter. There is a cutoff roughly halfway in, but you miss out on a lot. The sand pools can be tricky, but can be done without getting off the bike. The main loop also takes hours. Don't start it if you only have a couple hours of daylight left. It isn't exactly an easy trail, either - closer to hard core than even intermediate.
A great all-around trail is Klondike. More intermediate, shorter and some pretty awesome views - including dinosaur footprints.
Check out the Poison Spider and Rim cycle shops. Good people.
Oh, and the track out at Pahrump is pretty killer, too.
Sounds like an extremely fun trip.

| Re: bwhip's adventure week set to begin... Thanks everybody! It's gonna be awesome - wish you all could be there!
BDA - I'm actually going to have John from Poison Spider as a guide for a couple of days. I've got the guide books, etc, but I think it will be fun (and wise) to have some expert guidance. Don't really like the idea of crashing or getting lost out there by myself.
Probable trails include Slickrock, Porcupine Rim, Barrett Wash, - perhaps Poison Spider? John described Slickrock much the way you did. He called it a 3 1/2 hour wind sprint! Sounds like fun |

| Re: bwhip's adventure week set to begin... Sounds like you'll be in good company down there in Moab. Go for Porcupine Rim, it is a great ride.
One more trick for the Slickrock Trail - lower your seat. There are so many up/downhill transitions as well as tons of climbing, you'll want it a shade lower. Plus it is really easy to snag your 'bits and pieces' on the back of your seat on the really sharp transistions. Oh, and 3 1/2 hour windsprint? That's only once you know it, but very true.
I'm sure you'll get plenty of tips once you're there from your guide. The guys at Poison Spider know the place like the back of their hand. |

| Re: bwhip's adventure week set to begin... Have fun, be safe. I'll be especially interested in your reaction to track school with your son. I've been talking to mine about Grattan in June, but that would be his first trackday and maybe a school would be better. Will the dominant feeling be fear, pride, or competitiveness? |

I have told him that if I sense he's being foolish and trying to race me, that I'll pull off the track and watch him, because the priority here is him learning (but if he's got it pretty well learned by day two, it might be time for a little lesson in respecting one's parent! ) |
