Interesting to note that the article (and several other press releases) state that Monte Lutz started Sportbike Tracktime. Actually Pat Hurley started Sylvania Track Time which evolved into SportBike Tracktime. Pat invented the "Pay for tracktime" concept in the United States which has now caught on in just about every country that has a suitable facility and a willing audience. Pat is now the "Spiritual Advisor" for Trackoholics and made a rare appearance at Grattan this past Monday.

Interesting! What year did Pat start "trackdays"? Just curious, as the club I ride with was (as far as I know) the first club to start trackdays on the east coast, well, in PA anyway, in 1992.

Pat's concept wasn't new in relation to clubs renting the track for a "Test and Tune" day (Ducati Canada has been doing this since the early 80s and I run with a private group that rides at Grattan once a month during the summer on a very laid back causual format).

Pat ran an affiliation with an Aprilia shop and brought several rental bikes, leathers etc. to the track and put together lunch and training for the novice riders. He got several sponsors involved to display their products during the day and essentially put together what is now the "standard" for pay to ride trackdays including WEB based signup etc.

Re: Want free track time for a year?

I'm just pulling this from memory so I may be off a year but I think 98 or 99

And Frank is right in defining it. Yes many groups, clubs ran events as test & tunes long before although they may have called them some sort of club event/gathering.

Patrick pretty much built what is in place today in terms of vendors selling trackspace to riders, lunch, training, ect.

Few people know where this all started now that we have 150 plus rider trackdays around the USA.
